Adult Swim has confirmed it has cut ties with Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland. Roiland, who was the creative force and voice of Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith, will no longer be involved with the show after six seasons.
Justin Roiland’s firing from Adult Swim was reported by THR, which received an official statement confirming the news courtesy of Mairie Moore, Senior Vice President of Communications for Adult Swim. News of Justin Roiland’s departure comes after recent headlines about his impending domestic violence trial. Roiland faces one count of domestic assault with bodily harm and one count of forced confinement for threat, assault, fraud and/or deception. The initial alleged incident occurred on January 19, 2020, and allegations followed after a criminal complaint was filed in May of that year. The allegations come from a woman Roiland was dating at the time, but her identity has not been made public.
There’s no indication as to who could replace Justin Roiland as Rick and Morty, but it’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Adult Swim has had to replace a key voice actor on one of its shows. The network cut ties with the singer and squid star Unknown Hinson after posting abusive messages about Dolly Parton in 2021. The series later welcomed actor Tracy Morgan to voice Hinson’s character Early Cuyler in the final season, although his voice doesn’t sound like that by Hinson.
Rick and Morty could follow the same path as squidalthough there are notable imitators online that closely resemble Roiland’s interpretation. TikTok’s Sean Kelly has built a huge following just for his Morty impersonation; Could this be someone Adult Swim could consider for the role when the time comes?
At the same time, Rick and Morty is a sci-fi series that leans into the weird as much as possible. If Rick Sanchez can turn into a pickle, he can also permanently change his and Morty’s voices without the show having to jump on the shark to explain too much. In my mind, Rick and Morty is one of the most inventive shows on television, so you’d think its writers wouldn’t have to fight too hard to come up with a fix.
