Of all the blockbuster animated films Disney has made and all the Disney Princess fans have fallen in love with, few have had the impact of Frozen and Elsa, voiced by Idina Menzel. The film is one of the studio’s biggest hits, thanks in large part to the phenomenon that was the song “Let it Go.” It’s the song Menzel is best known for, so she obviously sings it often. The problem for her now is that it made the song harder to sing.
the stars of Frozen everyone has talked at one time or another about how the movie changed their lives. Talk with Cnn Idina Menzel says she had some understanding of what becoming a Disney Princess would mean to her career, but she had no idea the film or song would become the cultural touchstone it is today. . If she had, maybe she wouldn’t have made the decision to sing the song so loud, because now she has to do it every night. Menzel said…
I knew that being a Disney princess, being welcomed into the Disney family and being in a musical was quite a feat and a great accomplishment. I knew it was pretty epic, but I had no idea it was going to become the phenomenon that it did. So I went in once and sang it and came back, because they wrote another part and changed some lyrics. I realized that I thought my voice sounded too mature to really embody this young woman that we see in the film, so I asked them to cover it. I don’t know why I did it, because when I’m in concert all over the world and I have a cold and I just want to kill myself.
Menzel’s thought process is perfectly correct here. Elsa is a young woman Frozen and the comedian wasn’t sure if the character actually sounded like a young woman getting back to her feet having previously sung “Let it Go.” So she decided to sing the song higher to give her voice a younger edge.
Elsa is only supposed to be 21 in the first one Frozen and lived all his life in the castle. She is quite essential to the character that he meets as a young and vulnerable. It’s hard to argue that Menzel’s decision didn’t work. “Let it Go” became the song that kids loved and parents were sick of, and it even won an Oscar.
Unfortunately for her, this now means that every time she sings “Let it Go” she has to work a lot harder because the song is a little higher. It seems to be part of her wishes that she didn’t by now. Menzel continues…
But I told them, “Let’s go up a half step and see,” because that way it sounds a little more innocent in my voice, a little younger. As I watched it earlier, I thought, ‘My God, what was I thinking here?’ But I’m happy, because it sounds a little younger and a little more vulnerable.
While “Let it Go” may demand a little more of her every time she sings it, Idina Menzel admits the change she asked for worked perfectly, so she’s still glad she did it this way.
