This past September, DC fans received some pretty crazy news. It has emerged that Warner Bros. and DC Studios were currently developing a Constantine 2 – a direct sequel to the John Constantine film starring Keanu Reeves released in 2005. At the time it seemed a bit coincidental that a follow-up project was announced to be in the works 17 years after the original, but apparently it was. It’s not just something that “happened”: Reeves has spent years and years trying to make the film greener, finally getting the job done last fall.
The latest issue of Full Movie (via Cut Movie) features an interview with Keanu Reeves, and during the chat, the beloved actor was asked if he has “unfinished business” with the role of John Constantine. He explained that that was probably not the best way to put it and its he desire to get Constantine 2 in development, it was more about his appreciation for the character. said Reeves,
I don’t know if it was an unfinished business, but it was definitely a role I loved. And I think Francis Lawrence, the director, did a great job. I loved playing this character and I really enjoyed the movie. I was like, [adopts Oliver Twist voice] ‘Can I have more?… I kept asking almost every year. He’d be like, ‘May I please?’ [and] they said: ‘No, no!’
Now, after years of no-shows and behind-the-scenes regime change at DC Studios, it looks like Keanu Reeves is getting his wish.
constantinedirected by Francis Lawrence (best known for his contributions to the hunger games franchise), tells the story of the character of the same name, who is a magician and occult detective who specializes in distributing demons. The movie got what you might call an average response. professional critics and earned the scorn of hardcore fans for making significant changes to the source material (including changing the character’s hair color and country of origin), but it was a hit. Before the film finished showing in theaters worldwide, it grossed $230.9 million and was eventually ranked the 15th biggest opening of the year.
The blockbuster has gained a huge following in the years since it hit the big screen. Other versions of John Constantine have risen to prominence in pop culture (Matt Ryan has played the character in the Arrowverse and Jenna Coleman plays a genre version on Netflix. The Sandman), but many continue to associate the role with Keanu Reeves.
Now, it seems DC Studios is capitalizing on the love, and Keanu Reeves is clearly happy it’s happening. In the next months Constantine 2 Reported to be in the works, Francis Lawrence has been talking about making the film a better reflection of its source material, and it looks like the dark adventure will aim for an R rating.
