The last few years have been turbulent for the Duggar family, made famous by the TLC reality show. 19 kids and counting. cracks have formed since Jim Bob and Michelle’s eldest son Josh Duggar began serving his prison sentence after being convicted of two counts of child pornography late 2021. Now Sister Jinger Duggar shares her thoughts on her brother’s imprisonment in a new book, Becoming Truly Free: My Story of Unraveling Faith from Fearin which she wrote candidly about her conservative Christian upbringing and how Josh “lived a lie.”
JInger Duggar, the sixth child of the reality TV family, appeared on TLC 19 kids and countingas good as counting onin which he starred with his sisters Jessa, Jill and Joy-Anna, at least before the the reality show was cancelled during Josh Duggar’s legal battle. In his most recent book, Jinger Duggar Vuolo compared his brother’s actions to those of disgraced pastor Bill Gothard, the founder of the Institute on Basic Life Principles, writing (via eastern time ):
[Josh] he used his platform, and even his work at the Family Research Council, to promote some of the same ideas Gothard taught. But while he played the role in many ways, the real Josh appears to be very different. I was living a lie. Though he claimed to follow Jesus, his actions showed no evidence of true love for the Lord, a heart changed by the gospel.
Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar raised their children under the teachings of Bill Gothard, who understood the modest dress code that some of his daughters have adopted over the years, a apparent dismay of his parents . The IBLP also promotes large families and male dominance over women. However, Gothard resigned from the institution in 2014, after more than 30 allegations of sexual harassment by former employees.
While Jinger Duggar is open about her feelings about Josh Duggar’s mistakes, she said Becoming Truly Free: My Story of Unraveling Faith from Fear that the book is not an account of his family, but rather an exploration of his journey as he continues to stray from the teachings of Bill Gothard.

Even though I haven’t seen or spoken to Josh in nearly two years, I still pray for him. I ask God to show Josh his desperate need to repent. I want my brother to be genuine and honest about his sin and reject the hypocrisy that has been a part of his life for so long.
Josh Duggar was convicted in 2022 to 151 months in prison, before his release date was raised to 10 years. Now Duggar should be freed. August 12, 2032, if what’s currently on the books holds up. This will not be the end of the matter, because the old 19 kids and counting Star will remain on probation for 20 years.
