James Gunn on whether or not the DC Universe will have Avengers-style team-up projects

As the DC Universe takes shape under the leadership of DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, one of the main things audiences will be looking for is how the franchise differs from what’s to come at Marvel. . years. . Having written and directed Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Gunn is very familiar with how business is done with the MCU, and there are questions about how the DCU will establish itself as a new and different entity.

Of course, there’s a lot we don’t know at this point, but an interesting new update we’ve learned is that it won’t necessarily be there avengersblockbuster events that serve as highlights for the different phases of the new canon.

James Gunn was asked about the possibility of big DC team-up projects this week during a special Warner Bros. on-site press appearance in Burbank, Calif., and his answer is sure to inspire some chin tapping from DC fans. Instead of developing crossover-specific special projects on the board, Gunn explained that audiences will see crossovers in new movies and TV shows all the time. Says the director,

Everything intersects everywhere. All of these characters interact throughout the different stories. Now, that doesn’t mean forever. Brave And The Bold could just be Batman and Robin and the characters involved. But I know many other times these characters intersect.

James Gunn even went so far as to specifically identify a small screen crossover that audiences will see relatively soon in the first chapter of the DC Universe (which has the subtitle “Gods and Monsters”). Two of the programs that will be released at the beginning of the canon will be the anime commands the creature and live action waller, starring Viola Davis, and fans will eventually see a character from the former appear in the latter. Gunn said,

I know in Creature Commandos one of the main characters appears in Waller, but this is animated, this is live action.

During the presentation, James Gunn revealed that the Creature Commandos roster includes Rick Flag, Sr., Nina Mazursky, Dr. Phosphorus, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, GI Robot and Weasel (who fans of the DC live-action will remember were memorably played by Sean Gunn in James Gunn the suicide squad). Who will be the one who will appear in waller? We have no idea, but we’re happy to know.

unfortunately the only DC Universe title that has a release date is Superman: Legacy, which is slated for release on July 11, 2025, but it sure as hell won’t be long before we hear dates for other upcoming DC projects. When we do, hopefully news will come with details of the various crossovers that will be released.
