The last three months have been quite tumultuous for DC fans, at least when it comes to the film and TV aspect of the company’s output. James Gunn and Peter Safran took the lead in October, and as they dropped update nuggets here and there on their division plans to connect everything together consistently, the duo have intentionally put off disclosing their overall goals until the time is right. That day has finally come, with Gunn and Safran sharing a slew of news about their DCU goals, and that includes details about HBO Max’s Green Lantern TV show that HBO fans should enjoy.
As revealed the suicide squad‘s, the first live-action episodic series centered around the intergalactic body of heroes will be dubbed lanternsand in fact will focus on two of the character’s most iconic alter egos, rectify the initial plans . Here’s what Gunn had to offer, including a comparison to one of HBO’s best (if not entirely perfect) dramas. In his words:
So our next project is another TV show, a series. We call it Lanterns and it features two of our favorite Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart. It will be with HBO Max, like all of our series, which we will talk about today. And it’s more of a True Detective-type mystery with our two lanterns, an earth-based mystery.
I love the unexpected juxtaposition of HBO’s gritty and violent film. true detective anthology and a pair of flying, material-manipulating, color-obsessed DC superheroes. Which isn’t to say viewers should absolutely expect to see Hal and John investigating murders and wild rituals that may or may not spill over into supernatural territory, though that’s not entirely out of the question. I guess Gunn is referring more to true detectiveThe dense and twisty narratives are an inspiring stepping stone to the crime at hand. lanterns. Though two main characters face the mystery, it’s also an obvious similarity.
It’s too late to start the election campaign lanterns also be inspired by the cast true detective Cast Season 1’s Matthew McConaughey as Hal Jordan and Season 3’s Mahershala Ali as John Stewart? I guess the actors might be a little old to play DC’s first time stalwarts, unless the story itself calls for it.
Talking about the story, Peter Safran shared that the center hooks up lanterns will be the one that has narrative reverberations in this fictional universe, saying:
This leads to the overarching story we tell across the various movies and TV shows. We found this ancient horror on Earth, and these guys are basically super cops on Precinct Earth.
As DC has leaned more towards horror in recent years on the comedic side of things, from the excellence of dc the vampire slayer at his Evocation line a Batman: ReptilianMarvel of Batshit, they’re 100% into live action fare that sticks to some of those same vibes, especially when it comes to the episodic side. the BatmanThe Riddler, whose portrayer Paul Dano has an ongoing career First year comic book prequel, is a prime example of such insanity, but it will be very different for a more horribly twisted Green Lantern story. That said, it can be expected and assumed that Hal and John’s dynamic won’t be quite as heavy and stuffy.
James Gunn wrapped the file lanterns spoke to his HBO Max TV show as another point of comparison, this time in regards to the upcoming series’ place in DC’s crowded slate of upcoming movies and series.
And the story will intertwine between movies and TV shows. Peacemaker is a good example of how this works, and that’s what we’re going to do with this big global story that we’re telling.
Although of course it is not clear when lanterns will debut for those who have HBO maximum subscriptions , the fact that the casting hasn’t been announced yet is probably a sign that we’re a long way from seeing Hal Jordan and John Stewart bring their rings to the broadcast. As long as it continues to survive HBO Max’s content purges, waiting seems like the glass-half-full option.
Before that, however, TV fans can expect to see the return of the hbo in the form of a hit True Detective: The Land of Night with Jodie Foster in the title role.
