With superhero movies all the rage, there are so many actors who need to get in and stay in superhero shape. While a little padding in a superhero costume and a little CGI can always help with effect, the stars still have to work to get audiences to believe us as superheroes. That includes Ant-Man himself, Paul Rudd, who apparently put a lot of effort into the first film because he knew there was a shirtless scene, even though the shot never made it into the final film.
Speaking to Men’s Health about his exercise and diet routine, Paul Rudd says he really likes the routine he puts into place when he needs to get in superhero shape, saying he feels less like an imposter while wearing the suit. However, it’s a pretty serious routine to start working out before you even eat breakfast. Rudd explained…
I get up and have a cup of coffee, then do some cardio before eating something. I would never have done this before [Ant-Man]. I lift weights, hopefully at least three times a week. And I’ve learned a lot about how my body reacts to food, how it reacts to exercise, and where I’m happiest and how it affects me mentally. . . . If I wear this costume, playing a character that should be a superhero, I feel better. And I feel less like an imposter. It looks like hell. This is really not the case. I find the routine comforting.
Considering the fact that most of the superhero costumes we see in movies cover actors from head to toe, chances are many of them get away with not putting as much effort into training. . But when the film calls for the actor to walk around shirtless, there’s really nowhere to hide. Just ask Chris Hemsworth, who has shown way more of his body than he has in the past shirtless. Though Paul Rudd has never had a shirtless scene in the MCU, it turns out he almost has. And while he was frustrated to see the scene cut because he had done the work, he also admits that he probably couldn’t have taken it seriously. Rod continues…
The shirtless scene was cut from Ant-Man. On the one hand, I was appalled that I had put in a year of hard work. On the other hand, if I had to look shirtless in a Marvel movie, I’d still worry about it. Eventually the film dragged on and the scene was inessential.
The scene was cut from the film, but released as a deleted scene so that anyone looking for it can find it.
I’m not sure everyone agrees that a shirtless Paul Rudd isn’t essential, but either way, we’ve yet to really see the hard work the actor has put in to get into superhero form. It seems like there probably won’t be a freshly shot shirtless scene in the upcoming one. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantummaniabut I guess we’ll find out when the movie hits theaters in a few weeks.
