Jaswant Singh Chail, who entered Windsor on Christmas Day 2021 to assassinate Elizabeth II with a crossbow, pleaded guilty on Friday to treason under Section 2 of the Treason Act for attempting to “injure or harm His Majesty“.
The man, who was appearing in London’s Assize Court, Old Bailey Court, admitted threatening to kill the Queen and possessing a loaded gun inside the Windsor compound, the BBC reports.
Jaswant Singh Chail is the first figure to be charged with treason since 1981. This ancient law which was enacted during the reign of Queen Victoria in 1842 convicts people of high treason in the UK.
Internship in psychiatric care
On December 25, 2021, Jaswant Singh Chail appeared outside Windsor Castle and told a police officer: “I am here to kill the Queen.”
The monarch spent Christmas there, the first since the death of her husband Felipe, after having given up going to parties as usual at her residence in Sandringham. The man was then admitted to psychiatric care.
Intrusion attempts of this type are not rare. The most spectacular dates back to 1982, in Buckingham, when Michael Fagan had managed to reach the queen’s bedroom, who was in her bed.
