Given the popularity of superhero movies these days, assuming you’re a big name in Hollywood, it seems like it’s only a matter of time before you become famous in the genre. For All everywhere at once AND Grey’s Anatomy star Harry Shum Jr. (who is still related to asian rich boobs spin-off), that moment came when he chose to voice Brainiac 5 legion of superheroesthe following direct-to-video DC animated film Green Lantern: Beware of my power in the Tomorrowverse continuity. Though Brainiac 5 is traditionally portrayed as a heroic character, Shum informed Gossipify that if he were given the opportunity to star in a live-action superhero film, he would prefer to play a villain.
legion of superheroes is Brainiac 5’s last appearance outside of the comics, coming a few years after Jesse Rath’s time as a character from super girland other major projects featuring it, including the legion of superheroes animated series, League of Justice Unlimited, small town AND Justice League vs the Fatal Five. Harry Shum Jr. clarified in my interview with him that he had a good experience with Brainiac 5, but when I asked him if he had any interest in doing a live-action superhero movie, and if so, as a hero or villain. The actor replied:
I like bad guys. I think the villains have the best story and really challenge not only the hero of the story but the people who watch it. Especially someone who describes a good meaty villain really thought twice about whether he should classify this person as a villain because he started thinking, obviously, with Heath Ledger’s Joker in mind, starting to think: ‘Bueno, ¿ quién You’re right. ? And who is wrong? For me, that’s when I would take a chance on a live action movie. [superhero movie], and I don’t want to play bad guy or superhero. I don’t care much. What I’m really interested in is questioning the things that we put into the settings and space of superheroes and villains, and I think there are a lot of great characters in the DC universe who do that.
Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning (and unpredictable) performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight is a great example to use as you revisit why you’d rather be cast in a superhero movie as a villain than a hero. . . As Harry Shum Jr. said, he’s ultimately not interested in being a superhero movie just for fun, nor does he want to play a villainous character without any depth. He wants any antagonistic character that makes the audience think and maybe even sympathize with his actions. From Shum’s perspective, DC has a lot of characters that fit that mold for him.
It goes without saying that if Harry Shum Jr. gets that role in a superhero movie, we’ll let you know. For now, it’s only days away from seeing his version of Brainiac 5 cross paths with Meg Donnelly’s Supergirl, who is transported back to the 31st century to attend Legion Academy after struggling to adjust to life on Earth today. . legion of superheroes is directed by Jeff Wamester, who was particularly “excited” to hire this team, and Josie Campbell wrote the screenplay. Shum and Donnelly’s co-stars include Darren Criss as Superman, Jensen Ackles as Batman, Matt Bomer as The Flash, and Yuri Lowenthal (who you may recognize as the voice of He-Man) as Mon- El, among many others.
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment released legion of superheroes on Digital, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack and Blu-ray Tuesday February 7th. Pull out your HBO Max subscription if you want to rewatch past Tomorrowverse movies early or dive into the timeline of the DC Animated Movie Universe.
