The new year is off to a good start for some major NBC series, with night courtyard AND field recently signed up breakthrough as shows guaranteed to return for the 2023-2024 TV season. At the same time, it’s the first season of television in years without any guarantees chicago fire, Chicago Police, Chicago MediterraneanAND Law and order: SVU I will come back with Law and order: organized crime AND Law in the same situation. Now, an NBC executive has addressed the future of these six shows under the Dick Wolf banner.
In early 2020, before production outages affecting TV shows large and small, NBC renewed the shows of One Chicago and SVU for a whopping three more seasons, but those three seasons will end when the shows reach their finale in the spring. Susan Rovner, president of entertainment content for NBCUniversal TV and streaming, assessed the situation for THR. When she was asked if she expected all six of Wolf’s shows to return, she replied:
There is a lot of life and everything goes together. And I’m sure good news will come soon.
While it’s not a hard “yes” or “no” for fans to know whether or not they should care about their favorites, a “good news” hint is better than none! NBC is promoting all six shows, even bundling them together so they can air on One Chicago Wednesdays and Law & Order Thursdays. Though many of the long running shows have lost notable cast members including but not limited to Kelli Giddish from SVU and Jesse Lee Soffer of Chicago Police – I don’t see any of them ending due to a network decision. Sure, CBS NCIS: Los Angeles had a surprise season 14 cancellation, but that’s another franchise on another network without Dick Wolf as an executive producer.
Susan Rovner has not said when official news about the future of One Chicago and the Laws, but it helped better understand why an early renewal of these shows would be more sensitive than other series. The executive explained why freshmen show up breakthrough was the first of NBC’s 2022-2023 lineup to be revamped, saying:
That’s because we can stay in continuous production right now before a possible writers’ strike. It’s also a shorter command. Dick Wolf does 22-episode shows, so there’s not as much opportunity to continue production there.
breakthrough was a hit early enough that NBC increased the original 12-episode order to 18, but even 18 episodes is still shorter than Wolf’s six shows. Also, as Rovner pointed out, a potential writers’ strike is on the horizon, with the Writers Guild’s contract expiring in early May. That in itself could be followed by walkouts by the Directors Guild and Screen Actors Guild after those contracts expire in June.
Some shows will be able to continue running after their current seasons end without interruption before the next one begins so that NBC still has content ready in the event of a strike. Susan Rovner assessed the situation and her hopes:
We try to stay in continuous production where we can to have more flexibility. Obviously we do it in the series we believe in: Night Court, Quantum Leap and LaBrea. But let’s hope there isn’t a writers’ strike.
Only time will tell if a writers’ strike happens in a few months, but preplanning from NBC meant good news for night courtyard, fieldAND breakthrough. night courtyard Sure, it was successful enough that a redesign probably would have happened anyway, e.g breakthrough was a highlight of network television during the fall season premiere. Based on some reports on fieldHowever, this show may have been saved from cancellation because it could quickly begin production on a new season.
For now, fans of all six Dick Wolf shows can still tune in Wednesday and Thursday nights to see what’s on at One Chicago and the law and orders, because it’s unclear when there will be an announcement about the good news NBC executive Susan Rovner alluded to. You can also find the shows to stream with a Peacock subscription and a few other viewing options in our 2023 TV broadcast schedule.
