During a lengthy interview, Armie Hammer became aware of the messages that come from his involvement in BDSM relationships. Since the DMs leaked, other stories have surfaced that the actor didn’t always give consent when it came to sexual activity. Now, he says that wasn’t the case and that he asked his partners for permission before committing to them:
I have never forced it on anyone out of the blue. Never. It is a very important part of the BDSM world. Consent. Because you do things that push the envelope. Do things that go beyond [realm of] “Let’s make missionary love with the lights off. You have to have that confidence. You have to have that vulnerability with someone. You have to have that “willingly giving up my control to this person” look. You know, the submarine [the submissive partner] is who really has all the power. Always. Speaking about how the alleged test affected him, the Critics’ Choice nominee said:
What it did for me was introduce sexuality into my life in a way that was completely out of my control. I was helpless in the face of the situation. I had no agency in the situation. My interests then went to: I want to be in control, sexually.
Since the allegations against Armie Hammer surfaced, he’s led a very different life, and at one point rumors even suggested he was hiding out in the Cayman Islands. Hammer said in this recent interview that the situation affected him emotionally. With this he once indulged in what he called a “suicide attempt”:
I just got into the ocean and swam as far as I could in hopes of drowning, getting hit by a boat, or eaten by a shark. Then I realized my kids were still down and I couldn’t do this to my kids.

Now I’m grateful for everything that’s happened to me because, as they say in ‘Twelve and Twelve’ [Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, the guidebook of Alcoholics Anonymous], pain is the touchstone of spiritual progress. I am now a healthier, happier and more balanced person. I can be there for my children like I’ve never been. I can be there for my father as he dies in a way I never could have been. I’m really thankful for my life and my recovery and everything. I wouldn’t go back and destroy everything that happened to me.
Only time will tell how comments on allegations of misconduct are received by those involved in the reported events. Armie Hammer’s future in the entertainment industry is also uncertain right now. If anything, however, it’s clear that she wanted to get those details off her chest and ultimately discuss her own account of events.
