Viewers have seen plenty of TV cancellations in 2022, and while 2023 is just over a month away, it hasn’t been much better on that front lately. Streaming services, in particular, have recently cut a significant amount of content. One such person who was affected by the movements is vampire diary co-creator Julie Plec, since Peacock canceled his adaptation of vampire academy after just one season. Now one of the company’s executives, Susan Rovner, has revealed the rationale behind giving her the axe.
There are all sorts of reasons streaming platforms have been trying to cut back lately. These major moves can result from corporate mergers or budget cuts, among other factors. However, Susan Rovner told THR this is vampire academythe cancellation of (as well as the one of us is lying‘s) was more because the company initially made a huge miscalculation. Rovner explained:
I’ve had a history with Julie and Kevin since their Warner days. Both One of Us Is Lying and Vampire Academy, the bottom line was that it was too early to put those shows on the platform. What we have understood is that we must have parents before we have teenagers. And hopefully once we get parents with shows like Poker Face and shows like Traitors, we can make a show like Vampire Academy in a few years. The moment had not arrived. We didn’t have the capacity yet to support adding a young adult audience.
Although it is disappointing that we have not seen more vampire academy airing for the past 10 episodes, it makes sense that Peacock would want to appeal to mature audiences before trying to appeal to YA audiences. Fortunately, that seems to indicate that more can be done with this IP in the future, although I don’t expect to see the stars themselves reprise their roles for a potential revamp.
vampire academy was announced in 2021 and its creator had previously promoted it by making Bridgerton AND hunger games Comparisons While that’s not enough to save the series, one can’t help but appreciate what she and her creative team were after. (And some might say it was a better fit than 2014’s underwhelming film.)
Just days after the vampire show’s eviction, another series of Julie Plec’s Peacock was cancelled, and the eviction occurred before the show had even premiered. by Plec dead day adaptation, with which he designed DTT co-creator Kevin Williamson, will no longer advance the streamer. It’s certainly a shame for fans who were hoping to see Plec and Williamson work together again. I hope they find another project to work on. (I wouldn’t mind seeing them return to the vampire diary the universe at some point, personally.)
Meanwhile, Julie Plec has several other shows in development right now, so she still has plenty of other productions to focus on. She also has an overall deal with Universal TV, so it looks like she won’t be stopping producing new series anytime soon. Hopefully her next project will last a little longer and not be the last we see vampire academy.
