When you think of Anna Kendrick and Perfect, the song “Cups” automatically comes to mind. The song was a viral hit even before it was a thing and became a Top 10 Billboard hit in the process. Of course, the key to the song’s success was Mitchell Grant showcasing him his a capella routine. While the iconic scene seemed easy to pull off, there was still a long way to go in finding the right cup. Kendrick admitted that she and PerfectThe manager stole a bunch of mugs so they could do “When I’m Gone” properly.
They Perfect the student took a look at what happened in the “When I left” scene to make it perfect. Fitting the right cup fell to Kendrick and director Jason Moore for being ordinary sticky fingers. The Oscar-nominated actress explained why it was necessary to find the perfect cup to shoot the final scene:
Director Jason Moore and I, everywhere we shot, if we saw a cup, we stole it. We had this weird collection to try once we got to that point. We don’t know what the surface of the stage will actually look like.
While the cup was essential, one question arose during pre-production: how do you justify having a cup there for Beca to use? Kendrick explained how the audition cut came into play for the pivotal scene.
So we had to justify that the glass was there. So yeah, someone came in with pens and pencils. I thought it was fun tossing it in front of them. It’s kind of like when a cat tests you and says, “What if I drop it?” What would you do?’
After the success of Dusk franchise, Anna Kendrick signed it up Perfect audition without being sure of the musical elements of the film. However, things turned out well when he did the signature routine from the first film. The TV and film actress admitted she knew the song and the routine before auditioning for the comedy a capella. It was her idea to perform the act instead of the original audition piece “I’m a Little Teapot”. The last minute audition change worked in Kendrick’s favor when she got the part of her. Not only that, but she also impressed Moore and the producers enough to include the entire routine in the film.
Though the “When I’m Gone” scene became a cultural sensation despite the annoyance of some fans, Kendrick didn’t think the signature scene would become the instant classic it is now. Even after recording “Cups”, she still wasn’t sure of her success. Kendrick admitted on both occasions that he got “balls in his face” after the song started.
The cut scene helped make the former Perfect film a cultural phenomenon and a box office success. This success led to two sequels and a streaming spin-off series starring Adam Devine’s Bumper. A decade after the release of the original film, the Perfect The cast continued to flourish and has stuck together ever since.
