Michael B. Jordan will make his directorial debut with belief IIIa film in which he also stars. Jordan certainly isn’t the first actor to direct himself, but most others haven’t had to take on the task with a mouthguard. While the actor admits he had some unique frustrations during his first job as a director, he’s also learned a few things from his predecessors that have come in handy.
Michael B. Jordan says it was frustrating trying to act and direct at the same time because he often tried directing while performing in a boxing set. That meant he had a mouthguard on so no one could tell. Speaking to CSB this morning, he admitted he learned a “cheat code” from Jon Favreau and Bradley Cooper, which helped him. Jordan explained…
I can’t speak. It was frustrating at times, but then they started to figure out how my voice sounded with my mouthguard on. But then, also, the physical address. You know, one of the nifty codes that I learned from Bradley Cooper and Jon Favreau, who have acted and directed projects, was the super power of being able to direct while I was acting. So if I wanted you to be able to turn your body to the right, I’d just start walking that way in my performance and get the shot I need.
Before a scene starts, you can certainly talk to the actors about what you want to accomplish in a given shot, but once the camera rolls, you can yell “stop” or just carry on as best you can. Jordan spoke about the advice he asked of other actors who also took over directing, and it seems he got some feedback that was especially helpful here.
As a main cast member of belief III Michael B. Jordan is almost always front and center in any scene he’s in when it comes to it belief III. As such, everyone else in the scene will react to what he does, this gave him the ability to make the other actors do what he wanted by following his lead. And that was especially helpful because even yelling “cut” would be difficult and time-consuming since he couldn’t really speak. Jordan continues…
As you watch throughout the shoot, you’ll find little things you can do to influence the shot without interrupting the moment and saying “cut” and going back to your actor and talking to him. In fact, you can get it on the spot.
Fans and critics alike will likely have their eyes glued belief III. Potentially, the stakes are high in Michael B. Jordan’s directorial debut, assuming it’s a part of his career that he wants to pursue. We already know I believe IV Is coming. We’ll find out his freshman pledge is gone when belief III opens February 27
