Aisha Tyler has had an extensive television career ranging from a key role as a voice actress to Doormanco-host The conversation, and a lot of time in the process Criminal minds. Now the actress recounts her debut on NBC’s hit show, Friendsand share a memorable comment Matthew Perry said to her on her first day on set.
Tyler’s career skyrocketed when he landed a recurring appearance Friends as the love interest of Charlie, Joey and Ross during their time on the show. He appeared later in the series and was a central figure in several of the show’s major storylines. Speaking about what it was like working on the iconic series, Tyler shared one thing in particular that Matthew Perry told him on his first night of filming. The actress detailed On Fashion:
On the night of my first live performance in front of a studio audience, when the cast gathered at the end of the recording to greet the crowd, Matthew Perry made sure to tell me, “Get ready for what will change your life.” Done! I may have told all the guest actors, I don’t know, but it was a special moment for me and a fundamental memory of my time there.
Friends it was an incredibly popular show, so it wasn’t strange for Perry to say that. Prior to the show’s premiere, producer Jim Burrows took the cast to Las Vegas as a last hurray before their lives changed. He was probably just conveying the sentiment. The cast was incredibly welcoming when I first joined them. He was back in season 9 as they already had several high profile guest stars on the show including Brad Pitt, Reese Witherspoon, Tom Selleck and Bruce Willis. I think they were very aware that it could be an intimidating set, and made a special effort to be kind and open to me when I arrived.

Looking back on her experience on her show and what he did for her professionally, Tyler remembers it Friends moving forward with love The actress also opened up about what it was like to be the first black actress to have a recurring role on the show. It was honestly a great experience on a personal and creative level. I don’t think I heard it, even though I knew it was a big step, I don’t know if I felt like they turned it into something more than what it was, that he was just love for Ross… That’s it [wasn’t dialog] that it was an interracial relationship. There’s been no comment on the show about my character being black, and I think they just wrote that character as some kind of love triangle between Ross and Joey. They just cast a black woman, who I don’t know if I’m supporting color blind casting any more than I’m supporting people doing a better job of diversifying the shows.
