a million little things finally returns to ABC with new episodes for the first time since season 4 wrapped in May with bad news about Gary as he battles cancer again. The fifth season will also be the last and will have only 13 episodes. While the finale coming after far fewer episodes than usual is bad news for die-hard fans of the show, creator DJ Nash has spoken out about the situation, and it turns out his honest thoughts of him are optimistic!
When word got out that season 5 would be the finale, DJ Nash said his goal was firm follow the nucleus of friends through five seasons . Now, ahead of the Season 5 premiere, it’s been opened up give me my remote on the number of shortened episodes, saying:
I’ll tell you, doing 13 episodes is way easier than doing 20. I’m thinking about those streaming shows that do eight episodes a season. And United States [did] two, sometimes nearly three, times more. So it’s much easier. I think sometimes there’s staff fatigue when you have to do 18 to 22 episodes, and we’ve never had that.
From a million little things Isn’t it a procedural show that can only add a handful of fillers or completely self-contained episodes per season? Is it any wonder that staff can feel tired when the number of episodes reaches teenagers? That’s not to say every episode was intense from start to finish, but a series that covers a lot of important topics (especially Sophie’s story ) must be serialized. And if the creator is optimistic about the series wrapping up in just 13 episodes and the burnout “never comes,” I think fans can believe it. a million little things you can glue the landing at the end.
It turns out DJ Nash and the writers had a lot of plans before writing season five. He shared that the final plan for the finale “has been in the works since day one,” which has helped simplify the tasks. ahead of them to know what remained to be done. The creator shared:
At the start of the season, I think we knew what eight episodes were going to be before we even got together as writers. So filling the rest of the space was very, very easy. We have episodes that will spotlight different actors in different episodes, but this season brings it full circle on the guy who helps everyone through it and now he needs your help. AND [it’s] everyone gathers at Gary.
Gary will likely need all the support he can get now that he’s battling cancer again after spending many episodes believing he could put that part of his life behind him. Not all of his advances were particularly happy or salutary (like when it burst and attacked Peter for assaulting Sophie), but the big question now is: a million little things kill him in his last season, when he’s about to become a father due to Maggie’s pregnancy? Whatever happens, the Season 5 trailer suggests fans buckle up for an exciting ride:
While the series obviously didn’t shy away from death from the start, I hope a million little things he’s not looking for a bookend by ending the series on a tragic note. The good news is that fans no longer have to wait for the drama to return to prime time. The fifth season premiere of a million little things airs Wednesday, February 8 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC in 2023 TV premiere schedule .
Only time will tell if the fifth season fall for delayed viewing as much as previous seasons and you can re-stream those previous seasons with a Hulu subscription .
