Valentine’s Day is around the corner and if you can count on nothing else, know that there will be one or more new rom-coms for you to browse, if that genre is your thing. Netflix is delivering on that touching promise this year with your place or mine with Reese Witherspoon (which he also produced) and Ashton Kutcher, doing his return to romantic comedies after 12 years . with the movie soon on netflix reviews are ready your place or mineso let’s see if the critics think this pair has more onscreen chemistry than those hilarious and embarrassing photos on the red carpet !
In the film, best friends Peter and Debbie swap homes, she stays with him in New York to pursue her dream, and he agrees to watch over their teenage son in Los Angeles. Will there be hilarity at a distance? Along with Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon, the Netflix movie features many other big names, including Jesse Williams, Tig Notaro, Zoë Chao, Rachel Bloom, Steve Zahn, and more. So let’s see what the critics are saying, starting with 24 News Bulletin Review by your place or mine . Our own Sarah El-Mahmoud gives the film 3.5 out of 5 stars, stating that the stars are in their element here:
Your Place Or Mine has this warm, fuzzy inexplicable goodness that can leave you skeptical before weeping for the hope of love as the credits roll. While it doesn’t explore new waters, it’s worth it if you like an old-school romantic comedy whose lyrics you don’t yet know.
With the storyline of the house swapping between the two main characters, Debbie and Peter are apparently not together for much of the film. In exchange your place or mine use phones and FaceTime to show their interactions via split screen, e Pete Hammond of Deadline says it was so well done that staying home and watching this film would be a good alternative to other Valentine’s Day offerings. You can thank solid pros and veterans of the genre, Witherspoon and Kutcher, for doing this job so well. This type of film can be flatter than a pancake without the right chemistry, and even though they aren’t on screen together for most of the film, it all works out, especially since McKenna makes good use of the old split-screen device for bi sound. – Waterside and phone conversations, including a bathtub dueling sequence that is a direct homage (or heist?) to Rock and Doris in Pillow Talk.
Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly , however, disagrees. He gives the film a C-, saying even an audience with low expectations deserves more than what writer-director Aline Brosh McKenna offers and “smooth, empty tracks,” which the reviewer also calls “two blank boards.” From Review:
It’s probably not good news for your project if you spend half of your press tour defending your lack of red carpet chemistry with your partner. However, the mat may be softer, or at least thankfully shorter, than sitting on Your Place or Mine, an experience that often feels like watching two movie stars trying to sort through a pile of wet leaves for more than 100 minutes . What should be fun and lighthearted: Reese! Ashton! A script by the lady who wrote The Devil Wears Prada and 27 Dresses! – instead, it is strangely empty.
Lovia Gyarkye of the Hollywood Reporter think the writer builds a tight narrative with your place or mine, elaborating less than a “will they or won’t they?” and more than a “why didn’t they do it?” The critic says:
The film returns to the model of the genre and sticks to it. There are some cases of subversion, moments in which Your Place or Mine wink and make fun of each other. But for the most part, it’s not meant to surprise or confuse the viewer; it aims to please and, in doing so, helps reinvigorate the rom-com.
Owen Gleiberman of Variety He says, however, that a midlife comedy starring these two accomplished actors should be perfectly entertaining. What it has become, says the reviewer, is “two bad movies in one.” He continues:
Your Place or Mine is an outrageously benign film, which might not feel like a review. But it is so benign that it is harmless. There’s no tension, no biting comedy (except for Tig Notaro’s dry one-liners as a best friend who’s there to give advice), no romantic friction. Jesse Williams, as master book editor, is stuck without an answer, and Kutcher just doesn’t make a Peter character. He’s polite, selfish and a bit pompous, like he’s running a seminar. As for Witherspoon, she’s forced to play Debbie so compulsively that the actor’s glee begins to feel like masochism.
