A Million Little Things’ James Roday Rodriguez explains how Gary’s cancer prognosis will affect the final season

Spoiler alert! This story is about the Season 5 premiere, ‘The Last Dance’ which aired on February 8th. Consider yourself warned!

It was the beginning of the end for a million little thingswhen he fifth and final season started wednesday night. The season premiere featured a seven-month time jump, a death in the family, and some hints of what’s to come. He also answered the question fans have been asking since devastating final twist of the fifth season Can Gary beat cancer again? ? The short answer was no, and actor James Roday Rodriguez explained how his character’s prognosis would affect what happened. the last 13 episodes of the series .

In ‘The Last Dance,’ the close-knit group of Boston friends wasted no time in revealing to Gary and Maggie (Allison MIller) that they had discovered Gary’s cancer, and they all flocked to the doctor’s office to support him. . the couple reunited when they received the test results. The doctor informed Gary that he was responding well to treatment, but his cancer was incurable and he would have it for the rest of his life. This will no doubt have an effect on Gary, as will he he and Maggie prepare to welcome a baby and with whom James Roday Rodríguez spoke television line about the character’s mood, saying:

I say this with a responsibility to dramatize something that so many people have really had to contend with, affecting families and loved ones and everything in between: I think there’s a weird, maybe a little macabre, level of security just knowing that I don’t have to cross my fingers and hope everything clears up every six months. Because I think that in itself can create so much anxiety in a human being.

The constant anxiety about whether or not her cancer will return has been an ongoing conversation with Maggie and Gary throughout the series, with James Roday Rodriguez noting that while this is not the prognosis Gary might have wanted, there is It was a certain relief that he didn’t.
