Nia Long has been very busy lately with the Peacock miniseries. The Godfather: The Final Chapters opened in record numbers last December. He followed that success up with sleeper success Missing then the one on netflix your people, which dominates the streaming service. Long is no stranger to success and has enjoyed it many times during his long career. However, that doesn’t mean that her journey has been perfect for her. As important as that is, there are high-profile roles that she didn’t get. Recently, Long talked about not participating Charlie’s Angelsand now he’s opening up about not being “a talking point” when it came to movies like Avatars.
The actress got candid when she talked about when she wasn’t considered for certain roles. Of course, she has many film classics to her credit, such as neighborhood children, Friday AND i love jones. But as she explained to The Cut, there are roles she hasn’t considered for years. Avatars It appears to be a project she’s still thinking about, and during their recent chat, she said she was ignored. The star also shares her thoughts on the actress who landed the role she’s been looking for: Zoe Saldana:
I felt careless in things, that’s for sure. There were definitely moments like, why wasn’t I considered for this? For example, why wasn’t I considered for Avatar? I think Zoe is amazing. But I wasn’t even a talking point, you know? Often, to be fair, directors know in their heads who they want. It happened to me and it didn’t happen to me. I’d love to make a movie like Avatar because I’m a huge fan and I’m obsessed with it. I would even play a supporting role in a movie like that because it’s so magical and beautiful and there are so many lessons and a connection to Mother Nature and humanity and race. I just think it’s great.
Like many black actresses in Hollywood, Nia Long faced challenges getting roles in Hollywood. It’s clear she’s not bitter, though the film and TV veteran just wants a chance to be seen in blockbusters like Avatars. Later in the interview, she was even willing to audition for the fifth episode (which features more Earth) if James Cameron and the studio called her on. However, at this point in her career, many would probably agree that her name should be on every director’s list like Angela Bassett and Regina King if her role is a good fit.
Again, though, it’s worth mentioning that the 52-year-old star holds no hard feelings against Zoe Saldana or her associates. She’s totally a fan, and that’s what seems to fuel her desire for her to join Disney’s billion-dollar sci-fi franchise.
Nia Long’s candor is nothing new, as the Hollywood star isn’t afraid to speak out on topics like the pay of women in Hollywood. Her past feelings were also echoed by stars like Academy Award nominee Aunjanue Ellis and EGOT Viola Davis, who spoke out about handling beauty standards as a Black actress in the industry. Long has also opened up about a variety of other topics, including speaking on behalf of a friend and ex fresh prince co-star Will Smith after Oscars slap. Whatever role he lost, Long is a legend and hopefully even bigger plans (and maybe even Avatars) go to her in the future.
