Five years ago, there was a time when it was impossible to research pop culture information without the help of Roseanne Barr. the controversial sitcom is falling out of favor make news, with rosanne high-level deletion give way to The Conners‘existence. Now he’s returned to the small screen in a way that has embraced his comedy roots, with the recent debut of the Fox Nation comedy special. Roseanne Barr: Erase it! Of course it hinted at a bit of reminiscences from that tumultuous time, and she was talking about Dave Chappelle and others when she talked about how upset she still was about everything.
To promote the special, Barr spoke with the The Los Angeles Times all about the firing over his firestorm of a tweet about former White House adviser Valerie Jarrett, and how she was subsequently fired from the much-loved ABC revival and out of the spotlight. While other comedians have certainly taken “cancel culture” beatings, so to speak, Barr considers herself the only one who has truly lost everything, unlike the others. In her words:
They haven’t done it to anyone else in Hollywood, even though they still include Dave Chappelle and Louis CK. Well, Louis CK lost everything, but he committed a real crime. [offense]. And Dave Chappelle was protected by Netflix. I’m the only person who has lost everything, whose work has been stolen, stolen from people I thought loved me. He caused silence. There was no one in Hollywood who was really publicly defending me except Monique, who is a brave, close and dear friend.
Roseanne Barr has mentioned Dave Chappelle as Netflix’s protégé from the string of complaints against him and his comedy specials for pranks targeting the trans community, among others. Even though I didn’t have a network sitcom that was in danger of being cancelled, Chappelle followed up on his own controversy by introducing sl which definitely wasn’t an option for Barr.
Louis CK, for his part, continued the cancellation of his FX show with self-released albums and specials, while touring and dealing with his past transgressions which involved masturbating mindlessly in front of women. The comedian also won the 2022 Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album for Sincerely, Louis CKand was nominated in the same category this year for the album Excuse mewhich he lost to Dave Chappelle the closest.
At this point, Roseanne Barr may be on her way to Grammy success with her Fox Nation special, but that’s for the future. For now, she’s just trying to get comfortable getting back on stage, and she shared how excited she was that this was her most offensive stand-up set yet, which definitely says something about it. Barr says ABC hasn’t given her the platform to properly apologize and explain herself in the past, and she certainly doesn’t seem too interested in being good now.
When asked about returning to acting after everything fell apart at ABC, which included a 2019 tour with Andrew Dice Clay, he replied:
It was terrifying at first. I was very scared because I didn’t know how people would react. I was even afraid to go out for a while. So I’d go to comedy clubs all over the west here, and these friends of mine would call me up on stage to do five or 10 minutes. She helped. Joe Rogan helped me a lot. And it got easier and easier. People have shown me a lot of love. I was a little overwhelmed by this.
While The Conners it certainly has refers to the character Roseanne Conner in subsequent years killing her by overdose , the show obviously never invited the titular matriarch of the flagship series in any capacity. (Presumably via flashbacks, but this EAST a series that is used to reenact past stories). However, it could happen before it’s all over. Or maybe I’ll start the tour with Dave Chappelle AND Louis CK later this year. 2023 is wild.
