quantum leap returns to television this fall, nearly three decades after the original series finale abruptly ended the story of Dr. Sam Beckett, played by Scott Bakula. Although early reports suggest Bakula may be involved in the upcoming NBC revival, the actor himself has now made clear his connection to the show … or, more accurately, the lack of connection.
Only a few days before quantum leap revival (with Raymond Lee) will open on September 19, directed by Scott Bakula instagram with a message addressed to “Quantum Leap fans around the world”. He thanked them for staying decades from the original series, but wanted to “silence the rumors and move on”. He has written:
Here’s the simple version of what’s happening with Quantum Leap rebooting and with me: I have no connection to the new show, in front of or behind the camera. In January the pilot was sold and they sent me a script because the character of Sam Beckett was there, which makes sense, doesn’t it? As many of you have been asking me over the past few months, ‘How could you do QL without Sam?’ (or Al, for that matter) Well, I guess we’re about to find out.
Scott Bakula’s comments refer to what happened when it was first learned in January that a quantum leap rebirth could indeed take place. At the time, it was reported that the actor (who was absent from prime time after NCIS: New Orleans It’s over months earlier) it was should participate . According to him now, he was given a script in January, but that didn’t lead to him getting involved in the revival of the science fiction series.
Fans of the original might be happy to see that he made a special mention for Al, he played by Dean Stockwell addressing the question of how this show could happen without Sam. The actor didn’t explain exactly why he’s not involved in the new show, but he did explain the situation and his hopes for him for the project:
Since the series has always been very close to my heart, it was a very difficult decision to transfer the project, which has upset and confused so many fans of the original series. However, the idea of someone “jumping” in time and walking a mile in someone else’s shoes is still a very interesting concept and one worth exploring, especially considering the current state of humanity. With that in mind, I’m crossing my fingers that this new cast and crew have a chance to harness the magic that propelled the original Quantum Leap into the hearts and minds of generations past and present.
