With him Fall 2022 film season Just around the corner, it’s that time of year where we really start paying attention to what the actors do with their performances. In the latest film this weekend, the woman kingViola Davis transforms into a tough general for a unit of story-inspired African warrior women, and as Davis’ stunt double and the film’s combat choreographer told us, the Oscar-winning actress got it right.
Jenel Stevens, who has an impressive track record in acrobatic work, including numerous credits in Marvel Productions, spoke to Gossipify about her experience as a fight choreographer and stuntman for Viola Davis in the woman king. When I asked her about the exchange between her and the 57-year-old, here’s what she said:
He did about 95-98% of his stuff. I’m not even kidding. Maybe I’ll go for a run and catch myself. But it was mostly her. And I wouldn’t say this woman has limits on being honest with you. You know, obviously the falls, flips and things like that, falling to the ground, we didn’t want her to do that. She sometimes she did it anyway in certain takes. We say, ‘Okay, calm down. Are you trying to take my job? So she really had no limits when it came to fight scenes because she was really tough and she worked hard to look like that on camera. And you know, you have to look like that in real life for her to see herself in front of the camera sometimes. She got to work and she looks good.
Well now you have it. Viola Davis is the female queen. As Jénel Stevens shared with us, Davis, along with her young co-star Thuso Mbedu, began her training process in April 2021 before continuing to experiment with her for combat choreography. Filming for the production began in November, which means the couple have been particularly interested for six months. Stevens continued with these words:
we would like to ask [Viola Davis] what she was ready to do and what she didn’t want to do. And Viola Davis is the perfectionist that she is and then the hard worker that she is, she was pretty much ready for anything. I told her what we were going to do and if it was something that bothered him, we fixed it, but of course she could do anything we asked.
Viola Davis recently claimed to work five hours a day for her role in the woman kingwhere he did an hour and a half of weight training, three and a half hours of martial arts, punches and a 10.0 on the treadmill, according to his observations in Tonight’s show with Jimmy Fallon . Stevens said he worked a lot with Davis and a machete to get those amazing action scenes throughout the film.
neither did she the fantastic the woman king problem including Lashana Lynch, John Boyega and Sheila Atim, they couldn’t have done it without the acrobatics and choreographers team, Davis is on almost every take as a seasoned warrior, despite having no previous experience with a transformation like this.
