Warning: spoilers ahead for the series premiere of true lies on CBS March 1!
true lies it finally debuted on CBS in 2023 TV premiere schedule with a premiere that saw Harry Tasker (Steve Howey) accidentally take his wife Helen (Ginger Gonzaga) into the world of espionage, after a romantic dinner in Paris. Very oblique. Though Harry is the one who handles the punches and jabs, Helen has proven she can hold her own against spies, and the stage is set for the Taskers to unite as a team. true lies to continue! It was an episode of action-packed fights (some of which were in formal wear) and the stars talked about how physically demanding the stunts were.
Steve Howey and Ginger Gonzaga spoke to Gossipify about their new show and detailed what happened during the action, including what viewers might not realize about how it all happened. When asked what kind of training they had received true liesGonzaga immediately began singing his co-star’s praises, saying:
I think they enjoyed leaning into the fact that Howey knows how to do all of these things. So I’m like, ‘We got the boy! He’s going to jump through all that stuff and fight people! In fact, during the pilot, oh my god, we didn’t sleep, and then I saw them in that dinner scene. We’re running out of time. I’m like, ‘Wow, this amazing action sequence is coming. And they did it once! We showed Howey the fight one time and he just figured it out, and it was very intimidating because I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t think I can do this!’ [laughs] And it succeeds! He does all his own stunts and it’s very, very hard work.
true lies he used no camera tricks to hide that Harry was being manipulated by a stuntman into the fight sequences, as Steve Howey handled the action himself. According to Gonzaga, her co-star didn’t even need to be guided through the stunts multiple times to get it right. It’s easy to believe that it was “very, very hard work,” as she put it. She continued:
I don’t think people notice. He’ll finish a scene and everyone will be happy about it, and I’m like, ‘Steve just did cardio on top of acting and we’re already tired and he’s already slept four hours. He just did cardio for an hour straight! Each reboot is like a complete thing. So it’s amazing that he released it. He has to do so much more, and it’s the curse of knowing how to do it all. It’s like, ‘Oh, do we get this for free? Yes, do it. I feel a bit like that with improvisation. They’ll say, ‘Oh, he’s just flying away.’ I’m coming and I’m proud of it.
How many of us could go about our day jobs and still do enough cardio to be broadcast to millions on network television? No wonder showrunner Matt Nix is convinced Steve Howey was the perfect man to play the role of Arnold Schwarzenegger since 1994 true lies movie! Ginger Gonzaga shared that, like how the show relies on its co-star for stunts, the real lies The team is confident in his improvisational skills.
Plus, as viewers saw in the series premiere, Helen got into the fight against the bad guys! She may not have her husband’s super-spy background, but her drumming exercises from her training videos have proved far more useful in France than she might have anticipated. Ginger Gonzaga shared how Helen, being new to the spy game, really works in her favor in Season 1, saying:
I just did my kind of thing. I knew I had to stay strong and I took classes and random stuff to try and learn, but I’m lucky that Helen is new to this first season. She’s new, she becomes a spy. I can still suck and I can still say, ‘Wow, Helen doesn’t know! Isn’t she funny? So I’ve got a lot of comedy in the imperfection of this, which I’ll probably have to do a lot better with next year, but it couldn’t be any other than [Steve]. Good luck finding someone else for that role, really.
Conversely, it would be just as hard to believe that Helen had spy-worthy fighting skills right off the bat as if Harry couldn’t throw a good punch or handle a gun. During the series premiere, Harry had to show off his spy moves in clothes that were definitely not designed for an intense cardio workout.
Talking to Gossipify alongside her co-star (both also directed their “crazy level of chemistry” as Harry and Helen Tasker ), Steve Howey shared that he doesn’t always wear stretchy clothes to make his stunts easier, but he has some good things to say about what he’ll be starring in. real lies This allowed him to be an actor. He said:
Fighting in costume isn’t the most comfortable. But that’s the fun of, where’s the camera? Learning corners. How to throw a punch that looks good on camera. I always say “be careful what you wish for you might get it”. I’ve always wanted to do this job. I’ve always wanted to make an action comedy. I grew up with my action star heroes and one of them was the lead in the movie True Lies. So physique and acting has always been something I wanted to do. The projects I’ve done in the past didn’t allow me to do that. And I wish I did because I’m 45 now and oh that’s different! It hurts.
Playing Harry Tasker may have been easier for Howey before he turned 45, but he’s finally realizing his dream of making an action comedy. The stars no doubt agreed that he should play the TV version of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character from the 1994 film , after the movie star was one of his childhood action heroes! And it turns out that he came real lies with very specific skills that correspond to a spy:
He had trained in Muay Thai. I know it sounds weird, but I was a competitive pistol shooter, and I did it because I knew that one day I was going to play something, whether it was a soldier or a cop, an FBI guy, and here’s a spy. So the discipline of having a gun and knowing how dangerous it is, the discipline of the fingers, knowing how to breach, knowing when and where to hold the gun and how to shoot. It was all very helpful because they didn’t have to teach me, and the fight sequence, just like Ginger said, I just had to show me, and I had it.
Not everyone would be able to bring the Harry/Helen partnership to television. after becoming iconic in cinema , but Ginger Gonzaga and Steve Howey already seem like the right match for the roles. Howey went on to praise the show’s cast, sharing how difficult the pilot was working on:
It has a lot to do with casting. Anthony Hemingway directed the pilot, he called me and said, ‘There’s this project. You must do it. I can’t think of anyone else. You are perfect for this. And I was like, ‘Hey, you say jump, I say how high. Then, about halfway through, I was like, ‘What the hell did you put me in? He’s crazy, it’s so hard! But we had a blast.
