Warning! The following contains spoilers for the 9-1-1 episode “In Another Life”. Read at your own risk!
9-1-1 I can’t help but throw in a little drama DollarIn his own way, though I’m sure he would have preferred more emotional pain had he known the alternative was outright cardiac arrest. Police officer and the crew rushed Buck to the hospital after he was struck by lightning, with viewers treated to a wild “coma episode” in which Buck imagined a life in which he would never become a firefighter. Olivier Stark explained how this near-death experience will change his character.
Now that Buck is back home and on the mend, actor Oliver Stark spoke to TV Line about the sequel to your 9-1-1 character. For those wondering if this is just a two-episode thriller coming out next week, Stark assured that this storyline will continue throughout season 6:
The show definitely won’t roll around that fast. He came very, very close to death, which is a sobering experience. And while it’s positive in the sense that it survived, it will definitely make you think about who you are and who you want to be.
Viewers may have figured this out when Buck and MaddyBuck’s parents decided to move into Buck’s apartment while he recovered, but for those who don’t realize, 9-1-1 apparently he sticks with this story for a while. This recovery time will allow Buck to reflect on the traumatic experience he survived and perhaps even to ask himself what he really wants out of life.
9-1-1 fans might roll their eyes, and hey, I get it. So far, much of Buck’s story on the Fox series has revolved around making big life changes and reinventing him. Oliver Stark admitted he was aware of this trend as well, but noted that there was something special about this circumstance that might bring Buck closer to a finished product rather than a work in progress:
I think so. We always make this Buck joke with writers, we say, “It’s the new Buck” or “It’s the new, new Buck” or “It’s the new, new, new Buck.” He is always evolving and trying to find himself. I think this deep dive into your inner workings will help propel you towards that ultimate version of yourself.
As for how Buck can change, it seems he’s already allowing for small changes when he shocked Maddie by allowing her parents to interfere in her life by redesigning her apartment. They 9-1-1 The character seemed to actively prevent himself from wanting to tell his parents to let him live without a couch.
What this means for Buck in the long run, we can only speculate. We know Buck is in contact with the family he’s donating sperm for, and that’s a big deal. Maybe she can even convince Buck that he’s willing to try for his family, even though he really has no immediate relationship prospects on the horizon.
And to be honest, Buck in a romance looks exactly the same as Buck who 9-1-1 has given viewers in the past. For now, I’d be equally thrilled to see him heal on his soon-to-be-purchased couch and slowly recover. After all, he still needs to regain his strength as he grows as a person!
9-1-1 airs on Fox Mondays at 8 p.m. ET. The new episodes air as part of a slew of new and recurring programming in the 2023 TV schedule, so be sure to keep an eye out for what’s coming.
