Superman & Lois’ Chad L. Coleman explains why Bruno Mannheim is such a compelling antagonist and how he differs from Arrow’s Tobias Church

Yes Walking Dead Actor Chad L. Coleman playing a villain on a DC TV show from The CW sounds familiar, because he played crime lord Tobias Church on Arrow Season 5, which met an unfortunate demise at the hands of Prometheus. This time Coleman appears superman and laws Season 3 as Bruno Mannheim, an old foe of the Man of Steel from the comics. Leading up to this first new season, I spoke with Coleman about what makes his version of Mannheim such a compelling antagonist, as well as how that character differs from what Church brought to the table in Arrow.

According to The CW’s official character description, superman and lawsBruno Mannheim is known to Metropolis residents as “a local hero” and “a philanthropist who has revived the city’s struggling neighborhoods.” However, just like his comic book counterpart, Chad L. Coleman’s Mannheim actually runs the criminal organization Intergang, albeit in secret, and Elizabeth Tulloch’s Lois Lane has been trying for years to uncover evidence of their illegal activities. During my conversation with Coleman, I asked him what made him such an antagonist to put in superman and laws mix, and he replied:

I think that more than anything else, it is the socio-political strata who talk about the situations and circumstances that are happening in the world that justify it the most. It really grounds it in something that people can relate to and it makes you re-examine certain characters and how you perceive them. This man is a very compelling case for a different perspective on Superman and Lois. That’s what they kept saying, this is the kind of guy you like, “Well, he makes a lot of sense.” He makes sense. It’s true, it’s real. And that aspect… there’s a lot of power behind it, it gives it a different relevance. He’s still escapist, but he’s more of a hybrid.

Bruno Mannheim is one of two main villains he has been announced to appear in superman and laws Season 3, the other is Lex Luthor, played by a dude walking Dead student Michael Cudlitz. It’s unclear if Mannheim and Luthor will cross paths this season, but Chad L. Coleman made it clear that the former is a formidable threat on his own. Let’s not forget towards the end of superman and laws In the Season 2 finale, David Ramsey’s John Diggle revealed Wolé Parks and Mannheim’s John Henry Irons as the man who killed Irons’ version of Irons from superman and lawsEarth (which is separate from the main Arrowverse continuity), though why it did is a mystery.

As for how Chad L. Coleman’s version of Bruno Mannheim compares to Tobias Church, the actor explained that Mannheim is a more cerebral opponent, which means we should be far more concerned with what he does than to what Church did during his short stint. TO Arrow. Coleman explained:

Tobias was a more visceral physical presence and Bruno is his spirit. Even though he has this physical power and presence, he’s more calculated in his thinking. [He’s] a strategist plays chess and Tobias plays checkers. That’s why he came out so fast. AS [Bruno] it’s about the power of your mind, what you think. ‘How am I going to seduce this person?’… He is manipulative. His mind is amazing, his way of thinking and putting things together. And then he has incredible drive, and it’s for very specific reasons that are sincere.

With a setup like that, I can’t wait to see how Bruno Mannheim fares superman and laws‘ the protagonists of the same name and their allies. In addition to the addition of Chad L. Coleman and Michael Cudlitz, season 3 will also bring Michael Bishop to take over the role of Jonathan Kent following the departure of Jordan Elsass. Given the changes on The CW over the past year, it’s unclear whether superman and laws will return for season 4, although Wolé Parks is optimistic there will be at least one more batch of episodes.

superman and laws Season 3 airs tonight at 8 p.m. ET on The CW. Be sure to check out our 2023 TV schedule to keep up with shows that are currently on or will be airing/airing soon, and don’t forget you can stream superman and laws‘ first two seasons with an HBO Max subscription.
