Racism, sexism, corruption… Punctuated by a series of scandals, the Golden Globes announced on Tuesday their return to television in 2023, where they will try to regain their former glory after a last edition widely shunned by Hollywood.
“Nous sommes heureux d’annoncer le retour des Golden Globes sur (la chaîne) NBC”, declared in a communiqué Helen Hoehne, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), who constituted the jury of ces Reward.
In early 2022, the ceremony took place without an audience or television. Its regular partner, NBC, had pulled out of broadcasting the event because the HFPA was the subject of accusations that were seriously undermining its reputation.
A series of reforms
More than 100 officers had written to the HFPA in the spring of 2021 asking it to end “unprofessional and discriminatory behaviour, ethical lapses and allegations of corruption”.
Faced with this scandal, the organization quickly announced a series of reforms, including an unprecedented hiring of new members to improve the representation of minorities within it.
“The HFPA is committed to meaningful change and supporting programs that prioritize diversity, inclusion and transparency,” the organization insisted Tuesday.
In 2021, the Los Angeles Times he had investigated its operation and had revealed in particular that it had no black people inside. Since then, the organization has notably renewed its membership, including 103 new ones. But critics such as stars Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo have publicly denounced these reforms as insufficient, while Tom Cruise has sent the organization his three Golden Globes in protest.
