Friday nights on NBC became a family affair in the 2022-2023 television season thanks to Lopez versus Lopez, featuring the real life father-daughter duo of comic book legend George Lopez and Mayan Lopez. The show quickly became enough of a hit to earn a full season order through 2023, and the upcoming new installment will bring a new kind of obstacle in the form of a bird specialist. (Yes, seriously!) fugitives AND Very clever Former student Gregg Sulkin is coming to the hit sitcom to play this stuntman, and he’s opened up about his role in stirring things up for the Lopez family in the face of George’s “curse.”
Gregg Sulkin appears as a guest star in Lopez versus Lopez episode that aired March 24, titled “Lopez vs. Cheating”. The story of George’s infidelity on the show has been a running joke throughout season one so far, but it turns out this character who specializes in birds will mean Mayan has to question whether or not she shares the same tendencies as her father. The actor previewed how he plays his character in a setting that seems ripe for some good old-fashioned sitcom antics, saying:
Well I’m playing a bird specialist, this is the first time in my career I’m playing a bird specialist. I play Dr. Bell and visit the Mayan Vet Clinic during the week to get ready for Bird Con. When I take a professional interest in Mayan and ask him to help me at the convention, Mayan begins to believe that he may have the curse of him fathering him, which is López’s DNA struggling to be faithful. . There’s a great sort of romance that potentially blossoms on the show, which then causes a lot of mayhem and comedy for the entire Lopez family. Honestly, working with birds is a lot of fun and a lot harder than you might think.
I’ve heard of San Diego Comic-Con and New York Comic-Con, but “Bird Con” is new in my book! It seems sparks will fly between Sulkin’s Dr. Bell and Mayan, which could spell trouble if it turns out to be something like George and the “curse” of his infidelity. Of course, Mayan is a very different person from her father, and his relationship with Quentin (played by Matt Shively) has held up even in the face of the many pranks her father has pulled at his expense.
And real birds participated in the production of this episode! When I pointed out to Gregg Sulkin that most actors probably don’t have a bird major on their resume, the actor replied:
Now I can add it! I’m very, very happy with the new skill set. I learned a lot about birds and learned that there is basically an art to working with birds, and it requires professionals to be by your side at all times as you actually follow the advice.
While fans will have to wait for the March 24 episode to see how the show manages to tell its stories beyond including birds, it’s already safe to say Lopez versus Lopez I’ve never done an episode like this. In fact, having the animals on set meant the series couldn’t be filmed in front of a live studio audience as usual, according to Gregg Sulkin. He went on to explain that working with George and Mayan Lopez was an “incredible” experience, later explaining:
Giorgio is a great professional. He’s been doing it for so long and when he wasn’t working he basically watched it. I used this as an opportunity to learn and George was most charming and welcoming to me. Obviously everyone knows who George Lopez is, so when you get to work, yes, he’s your colleague, but he still works with George Lopez. He couldn’t have been nicer. He couldn’t have been more welcoming.
It’s not every day that an actor works with a comedy legend like George Lopez, so it’s surprising that the Lopez versus Lopez Did the guest star want to take a chance? With López known for his stand-up comedy and acting performances, Sulkin had nothing but praise for the comedian, later also praising Mayan López, saying:
Mayan actually became my friend at this point. She is extremely hardworking, extremely talented. I mean, this is her first sitcom and she’s determined to keep getting better and push herself out of the park and I’m really impressed with her, both professionally and personally. I don’t think there are many people in this town with a heart as big as Maya. Only me [felt] lucky to be welcomed into the Lopez family.
Gregg Sulkin may have felt that he was welcomed into the Lopez family after joining the show, but I can imagine that George, the character, may not be as open to Dr. Bell if it makes her doubt herself and believe in the “curse”. “. Thankfully, the wait to see what exactly happens is almost over.
The episode “Lopez vs. Cheating” by Lopez versus Lopez airs Friday, March 24 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, so be sure to tune in to see how Gregg Sulkin’s bird specialist character will mix things up for father and daughter.
