There are still several months to go to the Oscars, but we may already have the first place winner for the 2022 Oscars in Steven Spielberg’s film. The Fabelmans after the film won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. And now Spielberg himself has expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported his film.
It’s a little surprising that Steven Spielberg never entered a movie he directed in a TIFF competition, but he definitely had a memorable experience the first time around. In a statement released at Terme, Spielberg said this reception for his semi-autobiographical film made his first TIFF a “up close and personal” experience and thanked those involved in the film and his award. Several Academy Award winners for Best Picture also took home the TIFF People’s Choice Award, making this one of the first clues as to where these particular winds are blowing. Sure it’s too early to get a real idea of who might win, many of the high-profile projects that should be up for discussion are yet to debut, but Spielberg is almost always a threat to the Oscars, and clearly to the TIFF audience. he thinks it’s a big effort. The only people who don’t like it The Fabelmans are PETA.
Time The Fabelmans is a fictional story, based in part on the life of Steven Spielberg. The director had previously talked about his apprehension about making such a personal film for him. Receiving TIFF recognition likely helped Spielberg lift some of that emotional burden.
Critics have a similar opinion on The Fabelmans as an audience, 24 News Bulletin found a lot to like in Spielberg’s honest film. Of those who have seen the film at TIFF, it has only one negative review so far. If the film continues to be the only one people talk about when the Oscar nominations come out, it seems likely that it will get a good screening. The rest of us will have to wait a few months to see if we accept the TIFF audience. The Fabelmans is scheduled for general release in November.
