A Mississippi local news anchor has found herself at the center of controversy, and apparently not for the first time, after quoting one of Snoop Dogg’s famous on-air jokes. Barbie Bassett, a longtime anchor and weatherman for WLBT in Jackson, Mississippi, hasn’t been seen on television since March 8. With that, some are speculating that her comment during a story about the rapper’s latest wine release led to her breakup with the station.
It appears NBC affiliate WLBT may have severed ties with Barbie Bassett following the latest on-air incident, the Trumpet register relationships. On the March 8 show, Bassett, who is white, was commenting on a segment on the Day shift cast member Snoop’s new Cali Blanc wine, part of his Cali Wine collection. Addressing the other speakers, the meteorologist said:
Fo shizzle, my [racial slur].
Since then Barbie Bassett has not only been absent from the news, she is no longer listed WLBT site as part of the news or weather crew. The meteorologist has also remained silent on social media since that date and has deleted all mention of the brand from her accounts. The station did not release any official statement regarding Bassett’s comment or subsequent action, and when the Jackson newspaper asked for comment, Vice President and General Manager Ted Fortenberry replied:
As I’m sure you can understand, WLBT cannot comment on personnel matters.
The reporter’s absence garnered national attention, with many offering opinions on Barbie Bassett’s comment and her subsequent removal from the air. The topic was on the radio show. the breakfast clubwhere Charlamagne Tha Dieu came to Bassett’s defense, saying (via the New York Post ):
I don’t think they fired her for that. I might not even know what[racial slur]’means, I. Come on, how… That’s not a good reason to fire that woman.
As it turns out, though, this wasn’t the first career-related incident that Barbie Bassett has been involved in. In October 2022, the weatherman was reprimanded after a clip. gone viral of her referring to a black colleague’s grandmother as her “grandmother”. After this incident, Bassett issued an on-air apology, in which she said:
Last Friday during our “Today at 11:00” newsletter, I used a term that was offensive to many of our audience and my colleagues here at WLBT. Even though it wasn’t intentional, I now understand how insensitive and hurtful my comment was. I apologized to Carmen Poe. Now I would like to apologize to you. It’s not the core of who I am. And for that, I humbly apologize and apologize to anyone I have offended. I will learn from it and attend training to better understand our history and our people. I cannot repair the damage caused by my comment. Please forgive me and extend your grace through this terrible mistake.
