Chicago police chief discusses Upstead and “Fallout” dynamic after season 10 premiere, plus conflict with Voight

Spoilers ahead of the season 10 premiere of Chicago policetitled “Let it bleed”.

Chicago police returned to NBC for season 10 as the only One Chicago show with an immediate time jump, showrunner Gwen Sigan revealed during chat how “messy” the dynamic would become – just two weeks in advance. Voight was still recovering from Anna’s death afterwards the disastrous end of season 9 , and her inability to accept it was affecting the whole unit … especially Halstead and Upton. The two married detectives weren’t exactly fighting on “Let In Bleed,” but they weren’t exactly at their best either. The showrunner spoke to Gossipify about their dynamic and the ongoing conflict with Voight.

The dynamic between these three characters. changed and evolved in season 9 after Roy Walton’s death and Halstead’s moves to stop the FBI investigation before they end up with Upton and Voight. Halstead and Voight are more on the same level starting in season 10, but Upton questioned Voight’s judgment to the point of turning rebellious when Torres (played by returning guest star and new regular series Benjamin Levy Aguilar ) I was in danger.

They had a meeting where Voight said they couldn’t go on like this if they wanted to continue working together. After leaving Upton and Halstead alone, Halstead asked his wife if they were “good guys”. She was quick to tell her husband about her “obviously”, then she asked him the same question. He had the same answer for her. Upstead seemed to reassert that they are still a team, but the episode didn’t exactly end with them heading into the sunset together. So what about Upstead?

I asked Gwen Sigan how their relationship was going at the end of the Season 10 premiere and the showrunner shared:

They would like to go there, and you see it said in this episode. “Of course we’re fine. Of course.’ And I think that’s what they want so much, because they love each other so much. But sometimes, if you don’t look something straight in the eye, it can get bigger. You can still be there. So where we’re going to see the consequences is this dynamic in their relationship where they want so much to be good and so much want to be what the other person needs, because they love each other. But it’s not that easy.

Sadly, the thing about Upstead in this case isn’t that they’re the image of domestic bliss pouring into work. On the plus side, the showrunner has noted (more than once) that Upton and Halstead really love each other, and the performances of Tracy Spiridakos and Jesse Lee Soffer in the final premiere scene suggest that the characters are still engaged. (Spiridakos had a sweet message for husband on screen a few weeks before the first).

However, the imminent departure of Soffer as Halstead raises important questions about their dynamics, so great changes are likely to come in season 10 because of this. The “savior” theme of season 10 and its connection to characters who consider themselves destroyed (such as explained by Gwen Sigan and two PS stars ) also raises questions about how relapses will affect both Voight and Upstead. The showrunner wondered if the three would be able to functionally work together moving forward, after all:

It will be messy. As much as I think everyone would like to lie down and put it behind, [there’s] the aftermath of Anna and also the aftermath of [how] a relationship between Voight and Halstead has been evolving for some time. I mean, really, since I’d say last season’s eighth episode, maybe even last season’s episode four, when Halstead beat him. Their relationship has really been a long way over the last season and they’ve gotten really close.

Many fans probably vividly remember the moment Halstead finally gave Voight a shout. and punched him in the face last season after leaving some comments on Upton, so a lot has changed, so they are “very close” now. They’ve always had a different dynamic within intelligence, and not long ago Voight told Halstead that the unit would be his one day. So how does this new relationship affect them? Follow the following:

They’ve become kind of a unit working together, these two people that Halstead can push Voight into and Voight can really push Halstead and make Halstead, in a way, a better cop too, and then, in other ways, not quite. . Keep on. You can’t go to bed as easily as if you were having a conversation. We will see. We will see them try and see what happens.

This dynamic between Halstead and Voight will obviously continue for all the remaining episodes of Soffer. Since no one from One Chicago or Wolf Entertainment has confirmed how Soffer will be written, we can only speculate right now how Voight and Upton will be affected when Halstead is no longer in circulation on a daily basis.

Tune in to NBC Wednesday at 10pm Chicago police after the new episodes of Chicago fire (which featured Upton in its season 11 premiere) at 9pm and Chicago Mediterranean (which features some challenges for Will and Hannah) at 8pm For more viewing options in the not too distant future, be sure to check out our Program of the first TV 2022 .
