Amazon Prime has had great success with its own book-to-screen adaptations In the years. Some best shows on main video are based on novels or comics, such as Daisy Jones and the six, auspicious AND The boys. They are now adding another adaptation to their library with The power which is based on the book by Naomi Alderman of the same name. While any show based on a book is difficult to develop, Powers The showrunner explained how difficult it was to put together the streamer’s latest series and how they managed to piece together this rich and intricate story.
Raelle Tucker, Powers showrunner and executive producer, spoke about the intricacies of this show about women all over the world discovering they have electric powers for Gossipify, noting how difficult it was to put the series together. He explained that there were six intertwining characters and stories that he had to follow during production and that he had to work to make sure everything went smoothly. The series leader said:
Well, my brain still aches from the effort, put it this way: I’ll never get over it. It was the biggest piece of the puzzle of my entire career. You have the six intertwined characters, but also within each of those characters they have families or have proper relationships. So it’s this epic, epic group of characters and yet you have to present them in a way that the audience can follow and not just follow but get really emotional and recognize parts of themselves.
He’s right, the show and the book The power (opens in a new tab), follows several characters scattered across the globe as they try to understand their entanglements (the organ where power comes from) and why it has given so many women life-changing power. To break all the stories down, the central plot points are as follows:
- A family of five living in Seattle confronts power head-on as Margot (Toni Collette) works as a mayor to understand power and her daughter Jos (Auli’i Cravalho) learns to use its power.
- A Nigerian journalist named Tunde (Toheeb Jimoh, who you might recognize ted lasso to discard ) travels the world to report on these women.
- A British girl named Roxy (Ria Zmitrowicz) rises to power and faces aggressive family members and the toxic masculinity around her.
- Allie (Halle Bush) hears a mysterious voice in her head as she gains the power that takes her to a safe haven for empowered women.
- Tatiana Moskalev (Zrinka Cvitešić) is the wife of the president of Moldova and a prisoner in a gilded cage at the beginning of the series who discovers she has the power.
There’s clearly a lot going on with this show, and as Tucker explained, finding ways to present these characters in an easy-to-follow way was a huge challenge. However, she noted that she felt it had paid off, noting the “structural challenge” but also saying:
So yeah, that was a huge structural challenge. I think what I hope the audience feels is that even though initially in the first few episodes the characters are obviously connected to each other, they slowly grow closer to each other. There’s this gravitational pull. They will be some of the most important people in this world. That’s what they become, isn’t it? And so we want to go on a journey where they’re ultimately going to connect with each other, sometimes explosively and dramatically, sometimes charmingly and captivatingly. But that’s part of the excitement of a show like this: seeing how they connect over time.
While it was a big challenge weaving all these seemingly unrelated stories together for the Main video series (opens in a new tab)Tucker is right, to see everything start to connect and make sense with all these characters and their “gravitational pull” towards each other is fascinating. She also clearly illustrates how each woman uses her power of her differently based on her life experiences, worldview, and upbringing.
