Warning! The following contains spoilers for the breakthrough Season 1 finale, “Doomsday”. Read at your own risk!
breakthrough it set the stage in its penultimate episode for an epic season 1 finale, and boy, did it work. Doctor Ben’s song he went from the future to his own body to counter Ricardo MartinezHe wanted to kill the team and managed to do it without drastically altering the timeline. Sadly, fans were left wondering what would happen next, thanks to a cryptic final scene. fortunately showrunners Martin Gero has the answers we seek.
After Ben managed to save the day and ensure that his future relationship with Addison would not change, viewers saw him leave his past body. The final scene showed the rotating quantum accelerator and ended with addison react to something off screen that we haven’t seen. I spoke with showrunner Martin Gero about the decision to end the season on such a cliffhanger, and he said the series’ early success definitely played a part in that event:
Well, we are very lucky. We have amazing fans who have turned up in droves to watch the show which has ensured a speedy recovery. We were in the luxurious position of knowing we were going to get a season 2, so we didn’t have to say, “Let’s design an ending that can work both ways.” For us, it’s the promise that there’s more to come.
breakthrough got a renewal early on NBC season 2, giving the team a chance to make a suspenseful season 1 finale that didn’t iron out all the loose ends. Martin Gero previously teased that the idea of season 2 is far-fetched, so viewers should have high expectations for what’s to come.
Martin Gero was ready to give a detail ahead of season 2 on the continuation of breakthrough, in case it was necessary to say. Gero confirmed the one thing fans may be wondering after the season 1 finale and announced that he will be the protagonist of the events of season 2:
Of course, he won’t be returning for reasons we’ll see in Season 2. I guess that’s a bit pessimistic. To end up at a point where he’s like, ‘Oh shit, this isn’t going to go as planned here.’
If Ben Song doesn’t come back to the present, what does Addison react to? It would make sense if he was reacting to the quantum accelerator being empty, but it’s too early to tell for sure. Maybe the quantum accelerator killed someone other than Ben? We can only speculate, but given the hint that the second season of breakthrough It’s wild, I don’t exclude anything.
However, there’s one thing I’m ruling out, and that’s Leaper X Richard Martinez. Martin Gero confirmed that even if the future government sent Martinez to look for Ben in an attempt to prevent a nuclear war, we will not see this story in the future:
No, because this incarnation of that: Once Martinez was sent, they destroyed his accelerator. So if it fails, they have no recourse to start over. They should build their own accelerator to try again. Let’s just say they won’t. Martinez’s story is over.
breakthrough will pass by this story thread, so I guess fans should just expect the unexpected in the future. I’m happy to hear this news, because this season there has been no shortage of creativity and the cast is incredible. There is great potential for Ben to do some harm in the future.
As mentioned, the second season of breakthrough It is guaranteed and is currently under development. It looks like we’ll have more or less a blank slate of what to expect in the future. Given the open-ended nature of the franchise, where we never know where Ben might appear, a blank slate seems like the best-case scenario and keeps me motivated for the future of this NBC series.
breakthrough it’s finished for the season on NBC, but it’s definitely worth a watch for those who haven’t seen it yet. Those with a Peacock Premium subscription can watch Season 1 of the sequel series and the original series and prepare for what should be an exciting Season 2.
