The three CBS shows FBI the franchise is going strong with his very first renovations for the 2023-2024 TV season and upcoming global crossover promises to offer even higher stakes than usual. FBI, FBI: Most WantedAND FBI: International join forces for a three-hour global event it involves everything from being kidnapped in Rome to going undercover in your own turf and fighting to thwart a terrorist plot before the worst happens in New York.
The trio has important roles for Jubal Valentine (Jeremy Sisto) and Stuart Scola (John Boyd) in particular, and the two FBI Series regulars chatted with Gossipify about what’s going to “push the envelope” of the franchise and more!
How the new crossover compares to the first one
The April 4 crossover, with each episode titled “Imminent Threat” in different parts, isn’t technically the first time a case has spanned all three shows in the franchise, because Most Wanted AND FBI joined forces for launch International for the first of its series in 2021. This does not mean that “imminent threat” is by any means the type of case that the FBIs have covered in the past, and John Boyd explained how the new three-parter compares to the first:
It’s just that on a much larger scale. I think there are more crossovers. They really pulled out all the stops. I think we’re now able to do something that we haven’t been able to do with the release of International. We’ve had three successful programs in our time and with what we can accomplish and coordinate and the experience that we have, I think it’s just a more accomplished world for these programs and we can just push beyond that.
Pushing the boundaries of the Pending Threat World Event will mean different things to different characters, all facing a growing terrorist threat in New York City. For Scola, that means a covert mission to get answers; For Jubal, that means traveling to Rome to work with Scott Forrester and the International Flight crew. Jeremy Sisto shared his thoughts on how the first crossover compares to this event, noting one benefit of the new show that has been going on for a few years at this point:
The characters have had time to develop. This [first] one was more about introducing this concept, and this one was more about showing how these programs really work together and how it’s a really big team that’s connected. I mean, if we could do one every week, I’m sure you… You should feel like you’re seeing exactly what the FBI is: a really well-structured, well-run organization that evaluates threats. Around the world. and the danger they may pose to the lives of Americans. It feels like this is how the show should be, even when it’s not. I think the feeling of that, the outcome of that, from an audience perspective of how they watch these shows, will seep into their enjoyment of watching all shows in the future.
They FBIWe can’t very well organize a three-part crossover event on a weekly basis, and Sisto goes on to point out that planning alone would be a huge challenge. However, based on the actor’s comments, it seems viewers may leave the three-part show more fans of the shows than they were to begin with.
Jubal has “frustrations” with The Fly Team
The crossover will actually change the order of the shows, with FBI: International start the night and drive to FBI instead of the other way around as usual. Jeremy Sisto and Shantel VanSanten (who plays Officer Nina Chase, Maggie’s temporary replacement alias ) will guest star, Jubal and Nina who will join Scott Forrester (Luke Kleintank) and the investigation into the Rome kidnapping of Team Fly. While a Forrester/Jubal team-up would certainly be exciting, Sisto anticipated that his character would run into frustrations with how the International the team operates when he and Nina cross the ocean:
His primary concern is staying ahead of this potential threat, and he’s well used to getting the access the FBI has here in the United States. In his office he has members of 50 different organizations who work with him, help him, give him access to everything they know. And now, suddenly, he’s in another world where the relationship is different, so he’s definitely running into frustrations that Scott Forrester is more used to dealing with. There’s some conflict there about how far you can go, what the limits are, and how far you can stretch them. It adds up to quite a conflict to get these characters on the road in their connection to each other.
Compared to Jubal and Co. in the United States in FBI, Fly Team must comply with many other rules to operate in Europe with the collaboration of local governments. Typically, Jubal’s challenges in the investigation are more likely to follow Isobel’s instructions and/or battle her own demons, such as when he fell out of the car first in season five. But with the stakes high and a terrorist threat to her hometown, can she commit?
Scola has secret fights
Speaking of the terrorist threat in New York, Scola will also be surrounded by people he doesn’t work with on a regular basis, albeit under very different circumstances than Jubal and Nina joining the International Flight crew. You will work undercover in an effort to stop the terrorist threat on American soil. John Boyd explained how his FBI The character handles the case without the usual kind of backup you can rely on when out of cover:
When we first meet Scola, he fights. You’ve been working undercover, trying to find these guys…and stop them. [threats]. At this point, when we reach it, the stress of work and the frustration of doing nothing kick in. You know, Nina is pregnant with her baby and at the same time she’s with Jubal and the Fly Team in Rome because an American businessman went missing there. There are many things happening. When you meet him, his head is there. He talks to her a bit, but she’s really having a hard time moving forward with the case. This is a difficult case for him. You definitely see him like you’ve never seen him before, which was interesting to play.
A covert operation involving a terrorist threat in New York would be stressful enough without Nina’s worries! Of course, it seems that Scola would be in much more immediate danger in his mission than Nina and Jubal with the Fly Team in Rome… if all goes to plan, anyway! How often do plans go well for Team Fly?
The agents are worried about Nina.
In general, it seems that the officers of all three programs have reason to worry, even when Most Wanted comes into play with Remy and Co. to partner. The two FBI The stars have turned to one particular person their characters care about: Nina. Although the agent (which she was he was previously considering moving to Los Angeles to raise his child) will be working with elite agents, Jeremy Sisto explained that Jubal will be more “worried” than usual to have him on a mission in Rome:
She’s pregnant with Scola’s child, so I think Jubal is concerned for her safety, just concerned for her in a way he usually isn’t. He’s not really used to running away with guns anyway, so I think he feels like he has an extra responsibility in some way, which is definitely not what she’s asking for and shouldn’t be what she thinks. [laughs] It’s not his responsibility, but it’s a parent and an important part of his identity. Even though he thinks she shouldn’t, he has an extra layer of concern for her. But she’s a great agent.
Jubal isn’t usually a field agent like Maggie, OA, Tiff and of course Scola, so it looks like he’ll be out of his element in more ways than one working with the Fly team in Rome. It should be interesting to see how Nina reacts to any further concern for her safety; She was, after all, a field agent and, as Jeremy Sisto put it, “a great agent.”
And Jubal certainly isn’t the only character worried about pregnant Nina working this case! When asked if Scola had him in mind or was just 100% focused on his undercover work, John Boyd shared:
It’s always on your mind. What’s so interesting about playing this character once you venture into the world of parenting and love is that becoming a parent will affect every decision you make in your life. And it’s still under the surface, and Scola trusts Jubal completely and gives Nina dignity for her choices as an agent. But when someone you love is pregnant, you think about her at work, especially when it’s hard.
Though fans will have to wait for the crossover to kick off to see exactly what all of this means for Agents everywhere. FBI honestly, it seems safe to say that the case will be rather “difficult” for Scola! All signs point to a case that will require everyone on deck, which is bad news for the heroes of FBI, Most WantedAND International but great news for fans expecting a busy televised event.
