I had the pleasure of speaking with Fabrizio Guido and Peter Mendoza ahead of tonight’s conference. mason perry episode, but before I asked them how “Chapter 13” progressed their character arcs, I wanted to know how they reacted when they found out Rafael and Mateo shot Brooks McCutcheon. “Pierre Mendoza: It looked like it had been locked up for a while. We knew some details of a deceased person and one of us may have responsibility, but that is not the case. And so it was very Casablanca; like each episode is a new embellishment of the story of how we got here, so maybe that’s why they did it, to create this truthfulness of ours so as not to give any details of how we got here.. All these ideas were being thrown around, so we didn’t know what area we were going to. It was like one big complete puzzle, but in the end it was exciting, shocking, amazing and it was like, ‘Oh, what are we going to do with this now? Where are we going? How does this affect our performance? »
Fabrice Guido: I was surprised, I was excited for the show, I was excited to see how the story would unfold knowing that I knew it was going to take us in a direction that would generate more excitement for us. We have something bigger to bite, something bigger to bite with the series. But obviously as soon as I directed it I was like, ‘Okay, see you guys, I’m going to do some character work and try to figure it out, because I know it’s going to be a big smudge.
So we know for a fact that Rafael and Mateo shot Brooks McCutcheon, but what hasn’t been revealed is why. While the Gallardo brothers initially claimed they did it because their attempt to rob Brooks went awry, it was revealed at the end of “Chapter Twelve” that Mateo had stashed $2,000, which is the amount of money he and Rafael had received to bring Street. the killer. . Matthew Rhys’ Perry Mason now has that custody money, and he, Della Street, and Paul Drake also learned in “Chapter 13” that Ozzie Jackson, a go-between for a stranger who has drugs, paid the brothers for once. – dependent woman. Here’s what Peter Mendoza and Fabrizio Guido had to say about their experiences filming that uplifting moment:
“Pierre Mendoza: It was like we were just kids in a playground and everyone was shooting at us. For so long we had worked in prison or court with Matthew Rhys and Chris Chalk and Juliet. [Rylance], but it was an opportunity to have fun, play, let go, show more about our characters that we could also discover at the same time. It was like we were playing tag and running and hiding, and it was so exciting to have the whole Colosseum to ourselves, and how so big and overwhelming, and yet so impressive. I felt so grateful because the whole evening was so fun it didn’t feel like work. So just the chance to get into different facets of the humanities, this family is just trying to do what they can to survive, making promises they may not be able to keep because they know they need each other. So it was a time where a lot of the chaos of the world was starting to descend upon them, they can enjoy little moments of respite, of a promised faith for the future, of something to look forward to. It was nice to be able to share it.
Fabrice Guido: What really struck me was the joy that we found in that moment, and that feeling that things weren’t right, but I felt like there was a moment of… well, life goes on. It’s about how it feels, but for them, life goes on and we will find joy in this moment and make the most of it. Because that’s what these people do, they’re resilient and they found that joy in that moment. Mateo was planning to propose to me, and I knew it. We knew it was going to be a special night.”
But with good comes bad, as McCutcheon Stadium was built where the Gallardos used to live, and mason perry Season 2 Episode 5 showed how the family and their neighbors were forcibly evicted from their homes. This flashback concluded with the deaths of Rafael and Mateo’s little sister in the fire that burned down their community and left Rafael with a scar on his neck from his attempt to save the girl. The actors had this to say about what it was like filming this intense sequence:
“Fabrice Guido: It was a very important moment because… this moment is my emotional justification to go ahead and participate in this murder. It’s something we believe justifies why we do what we do. It was also the moment I have the scar that will stay with me forever, the moment I lose my little sister. It was such a big scene and just standing there you feel the story and how these things actually happened throughout the story. You’re in the moment and you just know it’s important and you want to do the best job. In terms of scope, that was great. I said before I can see Peter, the police, the firemen, my mother screaming, knowing I have to run and get my little sister, it’s all happening at the same time, it’s not something you do in a very isolated way . This scene just happened, so it was so beautiful, almost like a big moment where you’re right now and you can just dive in and experience everything, instead of just being uptight and acting out, but no, this was really all happening. . .
Pierre Mendoza: I think the chaos of it all was crazy. There was a lot going on, there was a lot of build-up because we only shot it in the evening when the sun was going down. So we had plenty of time to gesticulate and sit down with what was to come. And I think, in our own ways, we were all trying to prepare for what it required, and yet when you were there, it was so easy to fall into despair, into sacrifice. Here I focus on my future wife, neglecting my sister and my duty as an older brother. Our mom and dad look after us so they can take care of the family, and I just let it go. Then my little brother runs after her, and I realize it and then it’s too late, and the only one I can save is him, but I can’t save him from the scar that reminds me as much of my disability as his. lack of protection. Knowing that we are now in prison still facing this truth that we cannot let go, we are failing. I failed, I let everyone down, I didn’t do my homework because I focused on what I thought was important to me. [and] Sofia, but I’ve neglected my family again and now I almost have to make up for what happened that day.”
Pedro Mendoza added it mason perryThe depiction of the Gallardos and their neighbors being “uprooted” from their homes is a true reflection of how Latinos were treated during the Great Depression, especially in Los Angeles.
