Movie musicals are a time-tested genre in the film business and are often perfect for rewatching. There are few designs of this type more iconic than the 1978 classic. Fat, based on the musical of the same name. In the decades since its release, the film has remained a staple of pop culture. Case in point: the recent Super Bowl commercial starring John Travolta. Paramount+ is apparently looking to capitalize on this iconography with its new series. Grease: The Rise of the Pink Ladies which serves as a prequel to the film. And the stars of the show recently spoke to Gossipify about the various Easter eggs and movie references included in the new musical series.
They Fat The film is arguably more iconic than the original musical, thanks to its stars like the late Olivia Newton-John as Sandy. The rise of the Pink Ladies (opens in a new tab) is filled with references to the film, with each episode title named after some of the film’s quotable lines. As you can see in the video above, I had the privilege of speaking with the cast ahead of its release, where I asked about the different Fat-isms that appear during its first episodes. Olivia Cheyenne actress Isabel Wells gave a sneak peek at upcoming Easter eggs, saying:
I think in later episodes, I don’t know if I can say, but there’s a specific scene that happens in the movie and we recreated it in a later episode. And I’m obsessed with it and I feel like people are really going to notice when it happens.
Well, that’s intriguing. The first two episodes of Grease: The Rise of the Pink Ladies Streaming now to those with a Paramount+ subscription, they’re filled with nods to the film that will delight generations of fans. But it turns out that there are some on the way that will blow people away. Give us the whole season already!
While The rise of the Pink Ladies deliberately invokes nostalgic feelings through the inclusion of various Fat-isms, it turns out there were more of them than even the actors knew. In our own interview, Jane actress Marisa Davila revealed that she’s still figuring out how the new series honors the film. In addition to the dialogues the cinematography of the show also includes her, as she said,
I saw the movie the other day, a few weeks ago. And I was just sitting there enjoying it and I was like, ‘Wait, we did that camera angle!’ We didn’t even know. There are so many times, it’s so subtle. It’s still a nice nod to the original.
Talk about attention to detail. While the cast of Grease: The Rise of the Pink Ladies Obviously leaning on the legacy of Randal Kleiser’s iconic film, there are more easter eggs than anyone realized during the filming of the musical TV series. And if the show is renewed for a second season, smart money says the tie-in to the film will be even stronger.
Of course, there are many too Fat Easter eggs that the cast of The rise of the Pink Ladies they really knew. Actress Tricia Fukuhara plays the aspiring stylist and founder of Pink Lady Nancy in the new series, and spoke about the one seen in one of the previous episodes of the first season of the series. As she told me:
I will say that there is a little Easter egg that gets sprinkled in one of the previous episodes and it has to do with costumes. Nancy likes to draw things. So if you’re watching, you might miss it because it’s so fast you might have to pause or watch again. But I love those aspects of Grease-isms.
I had the chance to see some episodes of The rise of the Pink Ladies soon, but now I’m tempted to go back and rewatch Paramount’s first two episodes to try and snag the costume-related easter egg Fukuhara is referring to. Obviously the show has a lot of entertaining content for generations of Fat fans there.
