The director Disney’s Strange World shares the rules for creating new environments and creatures for this film

Walt Disney Animations Studios are no strangers to creating new worlds for viewers to explore, but Disney’s latest animated film to be released later this year is about new worlds. Strange world is inspired by the adventure stories of the early 20th century and imagines a whole new earth full of weird and unusual creatures beneath the earth’s surface. As you can imagine, creating completely new environments can be a real challenge.

Gossipify recently had the opportunity to meet Strange world We asked director Don Hall how he and the Disney animators created the world and the creatures that inhabit it for the next Disney movie. Hall says he had rules in place regarding acceptable creatures in this world. The first rule was that nothing could have a face. Camera explains …

I think the first (rule) would be no faces at all. We didn’t want eyes or anything by mouth. (Laughter) I guess the T killers have them. Pterodactyls. But that was usually the case. We didn’t want to … and maybe it turned into: ‘I just wanted to challenge the animators and be in a bad mood.’ Just to not have characteristics so as not to anthropomorphize them immediately. And then, also because the animators challenged them to find ways to move that conveyed their individual personalities, and things like that.

Of course, if you’re trying to make a world look weird, create creatures as far away as possible from what we’d like to know. we saw in the Strange world trailer that at least some of the creatures are intelligent and we generally attribute intelligence, even on an animal level, to creatures with faces.

But creating creatures with no discernible faces wasn’t the only rule animators had to follow when creating entirely new life forms. Hall also wanted the creatures not to have many advantages. Instead, we get curvy and rounded things. On the one hand, these creatures still look unusual, but they are also more welcoming, allowing viewers to become attached to them. The corridor continued …

And everything too, just to make sure we don’t, again, is more of a design presumption, but not a bunch of “plain” ones. That’s a lot of curves and a lot of turns. Again, wanting not to have a lot of stiffness in the world and making it into something like that, even if it’s weird, weird and scary at times, but it’s also welcoming in a way.

Strange world It sure sounds like the title suggests. Don Hall has already co-directed great hero 6 Yes Raya and the last dragon, which suggests we might be on an action-packed Disney adventure. The movie will arrive this Thanksgiving.
