Before a million little things The book concludes with stories from our beloved group of friends from Boston, and as we’ve come to expect from the ABC drama, season five has been an exciting ride. One of the most gripping arcs of the show remains Eddie’s journey after being hit by a car in a Cliffhanger Season 2 finale and being crippled, as this season has continued to put David Giuntoli’s character in new situations to work with. The actor spoke to Gossipify about it a million little things comes to an end and how he fought to get Eddie’s story told authentically.
Eddie had to go through a lot a million little things fifth and final season , including difficult conversations with Delilah about her daughter and his complicated friendship with Nicole, the woman who hit him with her car. David Giuntoli spoke with Adam Holmes of Gossipify ahead of the release of the DC animated film Batman: the scourge that has come to Gotham (in which voices Batman ), and the actor opened up about his struggle to incarnate Eddie’s challenges as well as his triumphs as honest as possible about your wheelchair use. He said:
It’s a drama where you have to turn the tables to keep the story going, and we didn’t want to make Eddie in a wheelchair into a little narrative piece that then resolves itself over five episodes, because that’s not usually how it happens. …And I fought for a very realistic narrative about it. I took it very seriously, I think it highlights a situation that often goes unexplored and the pain of having to relearn everything and get over it, where now is your new normal and you can live a life. And I think we were able to show both struggle and overcoming in the three years I’ve been playing Eddie in a wheelchair.
Series creator DJ Nash has expressed similar beliefs, not wanting to use Eddie’s paralysis as a trope, as it would be inauthentic to what most wheelchair users experience. The fact that Eddie will never walk again was a conversation the character had with his son Theo in season four, and again in the current season, when his daughter Charlie was shocked to see him walking in footage from the day he was born.
The struggle for realistic representation materialized in other areas of the a million little thingsstorylines, including Rome’s (Romany Malco) recurring depression and both Maggie (Allison Miller) and Gary (James Roday Rodriguez) watching her cancer has returned .
In addition to discussing his wheelchair with Charlie, Eddie also had to figure out if he wanted to include his chair in his profile picture on dating apps, and we saw the limits of his forgiveness tested, when it seemed his friendship with Nicole could turn into something more. It’s definitely been a journey, and it’s clear how much the role meant to David Giuntoli, as he told Gossipify:
we just finished [in March], and it’s so sad because I love everyone. You only have a limited five years in your life, and that was beautiful and bittersweet. What can I say ?
I think millionaires can agree that the ending will be bittersweet, but perhaps the series finale will be less of a “goodbye” and more of a “see you later.” DJ Nash said leave the door open , in case they wanted to revisit that world at some point along the way. For now, though, fans should savor what’s left, with new episodes of a million little things airs at 10 p.m. ET Wednesdays on ABC through the end of May 3.
