Even Hollywood’s biggest stars have to start somewhere, so it’s not uncommon to find that your favorite actor appeared in small, supporting roles before making it big. You can often tell, at least in hindsight, that someone in a movie with a small role would one day become a big star. But apparently that wasn’t the case with Ben Affleck, who actually had the only joke of him in the buffy the vampire slayer overdubbed film.
Ben Affleck had several acting jobs before finally making it big. He and Matt Damon have even appeared as unlined extras in some films. He must have seemed like a huge leap forward when he appeared as the No. 1 basketball player in the world buffy the vampire slayer movie, because he actually had a joke. But the actor appeared in The Late Late Show with James Corden and said his acting was so bad that the film was forced to rehearse his line with someone else. Affleck explained…
I have a joke, it was for a basketball player… I heard it. I felt real fear… And then I went to see the movie with friends… and it looked so different. And that’s when I realized they had re-recorded my line. i was so bad. They needed me on the scene, but obviously the director [was like], ‘I can’t hear my voice anymore!’ They had to pay someone to come and say, ‘Hey man, get it. Because apparently I couldn’t say it convincingly enough.
the original buffy the vampire slayer film starring Kristy Swanson in the title role. It’s now something of a cult classic, though it’s best known for being the film that inspired the most popular film. buffy the vampire slayer TV series. They leukocyte The film already had a solid cast, in addition to Swanson, you’ll see Luke Perry and Donald Sutherland, as well as Paul “Pee Wee Herman” Rubens. And now you can add a very young Ben Affleck to the number of notable actors in the film.
But apparently you can’t add Ben Affleck’s voice to things you’ll recognize yourself in buffy the vampire slayer. Affleck says they did a surprising number of takes for the scene, where a vampire scares him on the basketball court and just passes the ball to him. At the time, Affleck thought the director was just meticulous; but looking back, it seems she may not have been happy with the delivery of the line and she was trying to get a better shot…that never came. Maybe I should have tried Batman’s voice.
It could have been that, or it could have been something less Affleck’s fault. The scene on a basketball court was likely noisy and the line may not be transmitted clearly enough, requiring ADR. Sure, they could have asked Affleck himself to come and record the line if that were the case, and they didn’t. So maybe Affleck was right that the director didn’t like his voice for some reason. You can see Affleck’s full comments and the scene in the clip below.
Whatever the problem, Ben Affleck is clearly solved, as he’s built quite a solid career, including a few Oscars. But he still remembers that experience and apparently finds it somewhat humiliating. I bet you could say that line right now. There was talk of a leukocyte starting over a while back, if that happens maybe Ben can make an appearance and take another hit down the line.
