Star Trek: Picard put your most loved characters in the crosshairs, like the next generation the crew infiltrated a borg cube in an attempt to free Starfleet from its influence and save it grinder. In the end, the situation was saved and Jean-Luc Picard, his teammates, his son and most of the other characters we followed this season came away with a happy ending. It came as a surprise to someone like me who thought Picard was going to die, but… Terry Matalas It was recently confirmed that it has never been on the table.
When the idea of one of star TrekThe greatest characters who gave their lives for the good of the galaxy, Terry Matalas revealed in our interview that he never considered killing patrick stuartSee what Matalas had to say when I shared my surprise that Picard survived, as well as his explanation of why that wasn’t an option:
It wasn’t on the table for me. Picard is already dead in season one. Maybe if he didn’t it would be something to consider. But it was also the story of a man who saved his son by connecting with him. And it would be like, yes, he hooks up with his son and then he dies. It wouldn’t be the best.
I can fully understand how unfortunate it would have been for Jean-Luc to give his life for Jack soon after they met. Sure, heartbreaking endings work for a lot of shows, but after such a fun season Star Trek: Picard Season 3 wasn’t going to be a great way to wrap things up.
instead of collecting Star Trek: The Next Generation crew at the funeral of his beloved admiral, Terry Matalas took a different route. He decided to recall the show’s famous poker scenes and explained why by explaining why killing Picard wasn’t an option:
He wanted to end this game of poker and he wanted to end with a sense of joy at The Next Generation family reunion. So, no, it’s not my particular bag. I really wanted it to feel like a happy reunion and a bright future for the last generation and the next.
Star Trek: Picard finished, but with the next generation crew and many others alive and well, one can’t help but hope this is just the beginning. Clearly, Terry Matalas has set the stage for many more stories to be told in the 25th century, assuming that’s something Paramount+ wants to pursue. Plus, it seems like a lot of the cast (including Ed Speleers) are set to reappear, even those who’ve popped up over and over again, like Brent Spiner.
