Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn Shares 3 Reasons Drax The Destroyer’s Skin Was Changed to Gray in the MCU

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe was inspired by Marvel comic book characters, there have always been differences between the Marvel movie versions, and especially the Guardians characters, compared to their comic book counterparts. Sometimes these changes are significant, but other times they’re just cosmetic. Dave Bautista’s Drax inside Guardians of the Galaxy he was one of those characters that look very different in movies because he’s gray, not green.

A fan recently asked director James Gunn about it Chirping if there really was a change in Drax’s appearance from the first film to the next guardians of the galaxy vol. 3As for them, it appeared that Drax did indeed have a slight green tint, but Gunn confirmed that Drax had always been gray in the MCU, and gave three very specific reasons for the decision, saying…

Drax has always been gray. Three reasons: 1) The MCU has more than enough green people. 2) With makeup, there is no harsher color to make skin look green. 3) Drax may like Christmas, but it’s not Christmas.

There were actually only a few green characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before the first one. Guardians of the Galaxy movies, in Hulk and the Abomination. Of course, the Guardians themselves also had a green character in Gamora, so it makes perfect sense that the film wants to help differentiate the two by making them look different. From the very first tutors movies, we’ve seen a lot more green characters, so Drax is all the more distinctive for just not being green.

Another reason Drax walked away from green was perfectly fine. Gunn says it’s especially difficult to make green makeup look like real skin. since the movie was already doing that with one character, and probably didn’t want to go through it twice. We’ve seen the work that goes into turning Zoe Saldana into Gamora. In fact, if there were two green-skinned characters, and one of the makeup jobs didn’t go so well because of how difficult it was, it would have been more noticeable when seen side-by-side.

While green makeup can be more difficult to pull off than gray makeup, Dave Bautista still has to go through a lot every morning to transform into Drax. And even removing Drax’s makeup is a chore.

Bautista didn’t hide that she doesn’t like having to sit in that makeup chair for hours. Bautista says she wouldn’t be OK with doing a Drax show on Disney+ just because of the makeup requirements. While she clearly enjoyed playing Drax, it seems he’s ready for that as well.

We’ll see what the last time Dave Bautista is likely to be in as gray makeup as Drax is likely to be when guardians of the galaxy vol. 3 hits theaters May 5. It may not look like the character from the comics, but for millions it will be the definitive version of the character. Drax is gray now, I don’t make the rules.
