following the titans The middle of season four explores things like Nightwing, Starfire, and Raven trapped in the hidden city of Caul’s Folly and Superboy venturing into “awkward” territory exploring his Lex Luthor side, “Dude, where’s my Gar?” exclusively focused on Ryan Potter’s Garfield Logan discovering Nyambi Nyambi’s B’Wana Beast’s The Red. In addition to being the source of Gar’s shapeshifting powers, this cosmic force also connects and pervades all animal life on earth. titans universes and many others, and eventually Gar found a way to reach the Red to see, hear and even visit different universes. This led to an epic DC Multiverse sequence involving Potter, which included an appearance by comic book creator Grant Morrison.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Ryan Potter along with actor Joivan Wade, as this episode also offered a long-awaited crossover between titans AND destiny patrol finally bringing these versions of Beast Boy and Cyborg face to face. But in addition to his screen time, Potter also co-wrote the story “Dude, Where’s My Gar?” with executive producer Geoff Johns, and the actor explained how they understood what he would see and hear Gar in The Red:
Geoff and I figured out what they were going to be. So I fought for Swamp Thing and the animated version of Beast Boy, and then the rest of it was a surprise, and once I read them, I found they were…they fit. It’s the last decade of DC content that gives you a taste of fan favorites and glimpses of people people might not be all that familiar with. And there’s this special thanks at the end of the episode to Grant Morrison because he wrote this idea first. So, to get back to this idea of multiversal theory and really explore it, credit has to be given where it is due. Yeah, we have to do it our way and not cinematically on the big screen, but I think it’s a little ironic that… did that ever happen?
After going back in time and comforting his younger, pre-Beast Boy self, Gar got his first glimpse of the multiverse when he saw The CW’s Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen. the flash running, but the speedster’s lightning struck the Titan on Earth-2, making him meet Brec Bassinger’s Stargirl, as he teased last September. After a brief conversation with her, Gar returned to The Red, where he saw visions of Swamp Thing from the DC Universe series of the same name, Shazam from the DC Extended Universe, and a television showing Beast Boy from the DC Universe. Teen Titans Go!as well as hearing the animation audio. harley quinn series, small town, Superman: The Movie and the 60s Batman TV series.
But perhaps the most unexpected appearance in the sequence is that of Grant Morrison, who has not only delved into the DC Comics multiverse through his the multiversity project of the last decade, but also broke the famous fourth wall of sound animal man series. Both things came into play on HBO Max (opens in a new tab)this is titanslike Morrison, who was shown drew the map of multiversityHe looked directly at Beast Boy and said, “I can see you. Do you see me?” When I asked Potter if he knew in advance that Morrison was going to appear in the episode, or if he was surprised, he said this:
So all the appearances had been planned in advance, but the ones I didn’t know were the ones Geoff had written that I found out by reading the script. Whether or not we got all of them was up for debate, and there were plenty more out there. We got audio clips from others that we might have seen, but there was so much content to put into this footage, and it was already such a massive CGI moment that it’s like every second is money, so we had to be very specific about what we showed .
If the Grant Morrison shows up titans is it from “our” universe or just another reality analogous to it, at least we know that the creator has the powerful ability to recognize when being spied on by The Red. At the end of “Dude, Where’s My Gar?”, Beast Boy found himself in an overrun version of the Doom Patrol’s mansion and was discovered by Cyborg moments after he passed out. Next week we’ll finally see these two interact, along with Gar reuniting with Brendan Fraser’s Cliff Steele/Robotman and Matt Bomer’s Larry Trainor/Negative Man, who he lived with before joining the Titans.
Unfortunately, our time with these DC characters will soon be over, as will the two titans AND destiny patrol will end after its fourth season.
