Probably the biggest example of this was Scarlett Johansson’s introduction of Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, who would later become one of Tony’s Avengers teammates. Johansson (who was second choice for the role) also shared screen time with Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, and 13 years after the Marvel film’s release, the actresses are destroying rumors that they’re contested on the board .
Scarlett Johansson stopped by Gwyneth Paltrow the sticky podcast (opens in a new tab) to talk about his career and the conversation finally turned to their time together with iron man 2. When Paltrow opened up about how people asked her if she and Johansson actually had a fight while they were working on the film, she had this to say:
Is it a voice? You have been very kind to me in this film. I was so petrified. You have been so kind to me! You could have been awful. I was so out of my comfort zone in this movie. I’ve never done anything like this before. Besides, you had formed deep friendships.
iron man 2 followed just two years after the original Man of Steelwhich was the first film from Marvel Studios, with The Incredible Hulk continued a month later. While Terrence Howard didn’t return as Rhodey, with Don Cheadle reprising the role, Downey, Paltrow and director Jon Favreau, who also played Happy Hogan, had become very close. But as Johansson said, there was absolutely no falling out between her and the Pepper Potts actress, who was very sweet. In fact, Paltrow was quick to note how nice it was to have another actress to interact with, as she was the only lead role in Iron Man.

Originally introduced as Natalie Rushman, a Stark Industries employee who briefly became Tony Stark’s assistant, it was eventually revealed that Johansson’s character was actually an undercover SHIELD agent reporting directly to Samuel’s Nick Fury L. Jackson, who appeared in the post-credits scene of Iron Man. Once that cat was out of the bag, she paved the way for Black Widow’s big but tough action scene, with Johansson sharing in 2020 that this was her first time in combat training. Though the actress acknowledges that her character was “so sexualized.” iron man 2Overall, he’s had a good experience working on this particular MCU entry, and that included getting along wonderfully with Paltrow.
