Stanley Kubrick the splendor it’s a film constructed entirely from indelible cinematic footage, but few are as awe-inspiring as the shot of the Overlook Hotel’s elevator doors opening and unleashing a wave of blood that rushes and crashes into the camera. It’s a psychotic vision that encompasses the energy of brilliant creation, based on the beloved book by Stephen King. Perhaps the moment’s best test of power is acknowledging the specific influence it’s had on filmmakers, which is a list that now definitely includes writer/director Lee Cronin, who’s found an incredible way to reference it. the splendor in his new film resurrection of the wicked dead.
Without going into too much detail, there’s a sequence in the new critically acclaimed horror film where an elevator fills to the brim with blood and opens into the lobby of a building, and it’s impossible not to recognize it as a nod to Stanley Kubrick. Classic 1980 (you can see a clip of the scene in resurrection of the wicked dead trailer). When I interviewed Lee Cronin at the film’s virtual press day earlier this month, I asked him about the role he plays the splendor plays on his mind and his work, explaining that it is one of his all-time favorites. Says the director,
It’s another movie I saw at a very impressionable age that had a huge impact, in a very different way than Evil Dead because it was so psychological. I didn’t know why I was scared until many years later when I was able to get rid of that film. But it’s right up there in terms of horror movies, probably in the top three; Among all-time movies, probably the top five. And he’s one of those that is kind of buried inside of me and always sticks out on the page.
It’s normal to like a work of intense psychological horror the splendor would have seeped into Lee Cronin’s subconscious and influenced his own writing, which is obviously how the references to the iconic film ended up in resurrection of the wicked dead. As he continued, he noticed that he didn’t actually recognize the nods he had made in the film until he went back and read the scenes he had written:
It’s fun with the flu, not always necessarily… it’s not obvious, like I sit down and say, ‘What do I want to do with The Shining today?’ It’s through your ideas, and sometimes you don’t realize until weeks later and you read something and you’re like, “Oh, wait a minute.” I know where it comes from. Because also, I think, the family in danger in that movie has a little bit of a relationship to The Shining, because the family in danger in that context is very different from the kind of characters that we saw in danger in The Evil. Dead movies. the past.
It’s a tribute that has won the approval of one of the brilliant minds that gave birth to it the splendor. The image of blood dripping from an elevator is not from the original novel (it was one of many additions and changes made to Stephen King’s book adaptation process), and although King has been highly critical of Stanley’s work Kubrick over the years, has no problem with “an elevator that spits blood,” and was clearly very happy to see it coming. resurrection of the wicked dead. The author recently published in his Chirping tells the film of 2023, writes,

What makes this story even funnier is noting Stephen King’s deep ties to the history of evil Dead franchise. King had the opportunity to see Sam Raimi the wrong death prior to its home theater release and was such a fan of it that he wrote an article about the movie experience for Twilight Zone magazine, a huge boost for ultra-indie film. And as if he wasn’t amazing enough, he also ended up playing a central role in the creation dead evil ii through her relationship with producer Dino De Laurentiis.
