Spoiler Alert for Season 2, Episode 22 – “Franklin High School” – from Abbott Elementary School Before. If you’re not stuck in the TV show 2023 hit, you can watch both seasons, in their entirety, with a Hulu subscription .
Big moves were made in the season 2 finale of Abbott Elementary School When it comes to Janine and Gregory’s relationship . The two finally admitted that they had feelings for each other and clarified that they both fell in love soon after meeting. While that moment was one of the cutest and most satisfying moments on its own, it hasn’t lasted long on the show thus far. Fans were quick to let it be known that they were nervous of the abbot the final , especially regarding Janine’s decision not to be in a relationship with Gregory. Then Quinta Brunson, the actress behind the professor and creator of the series, weighed in on what happened, why Janine made the decision she did, and what will happen to the two professors.
After huge events in Janine and Gregory’s history, including their own first kiss at the teachers’ conference, which fans loved , and finally the confession, there has been a great movement in the relationship between teachers. However, at the end of the finale, Brunson’s character said that he still couldn’t be with Tyler James Williams’ character, and the two agreed to be friends. This choice surprised many fans, myself included, but the actress, writer and series creator weighed in on Janine’s choice and Gregory’s reaction with Variety said:
There is grace and great care in Gregory listening to what Janine is saying. Listen to her, worry about her and tell her, ‘It’s okay. I respect him as a friend and I have nothing more to do. Janine will focus on herself to be ready, checking herself to try and say, “Okay, I think I’m ready to never do that again.” And I don’t think Gregory is one to expect that, but there’s room for Janine to learn that she didn’t even have to be so hard on herself about the Mauritius situation. Dating, for young people, is not easy. You will talk to friends who say, “Yes, I stopped talking to that person.” I was just afraid of this and that and the other. But that doesn’t mean you stop talking to them! Keep communicating! Ghosting makes the other person feel awful. That’s how messy the dating world is and they are in the middle of it all.
Based on Brunson’s response, it’s abundantly clear how complex Gregory and Janine’s relationship is. They’re both still young teachers, trying to find each other and, at least in Janine’s case, she’s not ready for such a beautiful relationship. While it seems obvious that the two masters are at the end of their game, and we now know that they truly love each other, I’ll be interested to see how their relationship develops in season 3, because at this point, they’ve intentionally decided to stay put. the friend zone.
Quinta Brunson then went on to explain what the two are likely to think about in Season 3 regarding their relationship, joking about some of the things they’ll be thinking about in Season 3. Abbott Elementary School writers room:
The only thing they can do is support each other. Whether it’s seriously dating other people, or someone saying “I’m ready now” and the person saying “I’m not” or “I don’t want to do this anymore,” they have to be friends above all else. . I don’t know, but it’ll be fun to explore when we get back to the writers’ room.
In my view, Janine’s decision, while understandable, makes the “messy” there will/will be no dynamic between her and Gregory even more complex. While I’m one of many fans who would have loved to see the masters together, what Brunson and his team did was very clever and set the characters on complex and formidable journeys of self-improvement. Hopefully, though, this journey ends with them together.
