In 2009, a year after Robert Downey Jr. made his debut as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actor joined the long line of actors who have portrayed Sherlock Holmes. After his first outing as a detective created by Arthur Conan Doyle, he’s back for 2011. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, but that was the last we saw of the card. Although there are a number of things we know Sherlock Holmes 3the threequel remains in limbo, but is apparently still “a priority” for Downey.
Susan Downey, wife and producing partner of Robert Downey Jr., attended WrapWomen’s “UnWrapped” with Team Downey producer Amanda Burrell and Sherlock Holmes 3 came up as a topic of conversation. While assistant director Dexter Fletcher told ReelBlend that the third part isn’t currently in development, Susan Downey said she’s still talking about the wrapper. In her words:
Well that’s what I can tell you. And Amanda can confirm it. Before that, we had lunch with Robert, the three of us. And that was a very specific topic of conversation. So yeah, it’s down the drain. We’ll do it when it’s right, with the right people, but it’s a priority for the company and a priority for Robert.
Although not specified when Sherlock Holmes 3 He will eventually make significant progress, it’s nice to know that Robert Downey Jr. and everyone else involved still wants that to happen, instead of pulling off the project and not telling the public. Yet Fletcher, who was announced in 2019 to direct the upcoming Sherlock Homes film, also recently said that the lead actor’s busy schedule made it difficult to get everything back on track. This is in line with what Guy Ritchie, director of the first two, said Sherlock Holmes film, he said in February, that the “ball” was in Downey’s court when it came to getting Sherlock Holmes 3 off the Earth.
It is also possible that although Sherlock Holmes 3 comes to a permanent stop and never sees the light of day, the franchise as a whole could live differently. Last year it was reported that two Sherlock Holmes The spin-off shows were in development at HBO Max, with Team Downey producing. These shows would focus on new characters that were expected to be introduced in the upcoming film, but it’s unclear if Robert Downey Jr. will reprise the detective in any of the shows, even in cameo form. As it stands, this Sherlock Holmes saga still has a good chance of continuing, it’s just a matter of when and through what kind of project.
HBO Max subscribers can easily stream Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes movie, and if/when the day comes that a concrete update on where the sequel is, we’ll pass it on.
