ask anyone star Trek fan who saw the Director’s Cut of Star Trek the movie, and most of the time they will agree that it is the top cut of the film. Unsurprisingly, given that the original editing of the 1979 film was brought to theaters and most of the effects weren’t finished. That said, you may be wondering why someone with a Paramount + subscription you can check it now. It turns out that producer David Fein has a very good reason why it’s still available and why it’s still worth watching, even with the director’s latest 4K cut.
I had the honor of speaking to David Fein from the Director’s Cut of Star Trek the movieand after learning about the further improvements, I had to ask him if he thought there was a reason for people to watch the original. Fein, of course, was a fan of the original and explained why it’s important to keep it available:
I think there’s something very important that means a lot to everyone, even me, and there’s more to a movie than what you watch. This is what it means to you as a person, and if you started watching Star Trek: The Motion Picture and fell in love with the movie as it was. It’s like your childhood. He’s on his way home and enjoying the presentation. If it’s different, you can’t get that nostalgic feeling.
David Fein really explained everything there. Of course, Star Trek the movie It may not be the most acclaimed film in the franchise, but it does have fans. For some, it was their first time seeing parts of the Agency never seen before, and it was just thrilling to see these beloved characters on the big screen.
For these and probably many other reasons, David Fein believes the original Star Trek the movie you must remain available. It’s not the only release he has campaigned for to continue to have a place in the franchise. Fein talked about wanting to make sure the Extended Edition has a chance to shine and make sure the latest Director’s Cut update doesn’t overshadow that:
That’s why I fought a lot from the start, I mean it wasn’t a big fight, but I put forward the idea that we also want to give the special version a chance to be available longer because it became the home video version. And again, it’s like coming home or Thanksgiving. If you take it away from someone, how can they really feel what they fell in love with?
While some franchises have no problem removing past iterations of a movie and even making significant changes to the meaning of the scenes, it doesn’t seem like it. star Trek wants to do it. At least that’s true when it comes to Star Trek the movieand if fans have a particular version of the movie they want to see, rest assured they can watch it (except the forgotten field where Captain Kirk fought against Jesus ).
That said, David Fein is obviously proud of the status the Director’s Cut has achieved thanks to the work that has been put into the film for decades (mostly to improve the fear factor in this transport accident ). Fein expressed this towards the end of the answer, as well as his love of hers for all versions of Star Trek the movie:
I am thrilled that the Director’s Cut has finally taken its rightful place as the main version of the film. But you will find that those [other versions] they always have meaning both for people personally, but also historically. Go to any big video release right now and if they say “Includes print jobs” people are excited to see how it has progressed. Well, they’ve had 40 years to see how it has progressed, which is why I’m thrilled with the longer special version, because it satisfies that emotional need of people.
So for all fans watching the Director’s Cut of Star Trek the movie and you still prefer one of the first cuts of the movie, that’s fine. In the end, fans can enjoy what resonates with them the most, which should be a motto for everyone. Emigrate Fans to remember. For now, we’re just happy that the franchise allows people to have choices and doesn’t force the community to recognize one version of one movie over another. Now if we could get into the franchise’s habit of doing that stellar travel 4 arrived, we would be really in business!
