‘It affected me a lot’: Caleb McLaughlin of ‘Stranger Things’, speaks of the racism of some fans

The young interpreter Lucas Sinclair reveals that he has been a victim of discrimination by some fans because of his skin color.

Caleb McLaughlin may be one of the main actors in Strange things, was not protected against racial discrimination. Passing through Brussels on Sunday for Heroes Comic-Con, a convention that brings together fans of pop culture, the interpreter of the young Lucas Sinclair confided in the racism of certain fans of the Netflix series:

“It definitely affected me when I was younger,” the 14-year-old says when the series launched in 2016. Looking forward to meeting me because I’m black. Some told me: ‘I didn’t want to queue for you.’ because you were mean to Eleven (the character played by Millie Bobby Brown, editor’s note).'”

“Some people even go so far as to unfollow me (on social media) or not support me, because I’m black,” he continued. “Sometimes across the Atlantic you can feel the racism, the bigotry. Sometimes it’s hard to talk about it and make people understand it, but when I was young it really bothered me and affected me.”

“Why am I the least loved?”

Caleb McLaughlin plays one of five teenagers who encounter supernatural phenomena in Strange things, one of the most popular series on Netflix. Now 20, he remembers wondering why he didn’t taste the same notoriety as his peers: “Why am I the least liked? Who has the fewest subscribers? I’m on the same series as everyone else, since season 1.” :

“My parents had to tell me, ‘It’s the sad truth, but it’s because you’re the black guy on the show,'” he said. “But that’s why I want to use my fame to spread positivity and love, because I don’t return hate to people who hate me.”
