In less than two weeks, a musical with a singing and dancing crocodile will go around the world. Lyle, Lyle, crocodile is a hybrid live-action / animation family film that brings the beloved character back to life after being introduced in the 1960s in a two-dimensional storybook for children. When Gossipify spoke to the directors behind the Book-film adaptation 2022 Will Speck and Josh Gordon shared a sweet reason why they wanted to bring Lyle’s story to the big screen.
Along with a handful of other outlets, Gossipify had the opportunity to recently visit Sony Pictures and preview footage from the film and chat with the directors. When I asked the directors what their inspiration for the film was, Speck said this:
It’s funny because the book was written in the 1960s and there was a period of children’s literature that was kind of a reboot of what children’s literature was at the time, kind of like Corduroy and Charlotte’s Web. .. also like Where The Wild Things Are, where there is a kind of background to something more than what appears on the surface. And what we liked about the book is that the original author worked in advertising and really missed his family every day. And he would sit at his desk and scribble, and imagine he was a substitute in the form of this crocodile spending time with his family, because he couldn’t. So we learned something about desire and loneliness, but also about the idea that something could happen in your absence that brings unexpected joy to your family.
The book Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile and its predecessor, East 88th Street House, were written by Bernard Waber, who began his career as an advertising cartoonist before turning to book writing and illustration. Waber reportedly had three children while working in the art department at Condé Nast Publications and writing in her spare time, in part to connect with her desire to be away from home and his children. The makers of the next big fall movie were so inspired by this element of the film’s origins that they wanted to make the big screen version. Co-director Josh Gordon also said this:
I think for us too the story, intentional or not, is really about acceptance. It is about the fear of the other. And it’s about finding your voice, two important things to show the world. And now we have children and we wanted to reintroduce those themes to a new generation.
Lyle, Lyle, crocodile It seems to have a good atmosphere, especially for families. So far, from what I’ve seen of the film, it will be a great choice for music fans. the directors he recruited Benj Pasek and Justin Paul to turn it into a full-fledged musical after the songwriting duo worked in particular Land Yes the greatest showman. The film stars Shawn Mendes as Lyle, following his success as a musician, who released four successful studio albums at the age of 24. As the filmmakers also told us while visiting the Sony set, the crocodile inherited Mendes’s personality , describing both him and his character as a “gentle genius”. Alongside Mendes, the film stars Javier Bardem as Hector P. Valenti, the owner of Lyle, and Constance Wu, Winslow Fegley and Scoot McNairy as the Primm family, who are key to the film’s plot.
