Hospitals: caregivers on strike for better working conditions

At the call of four of the five main hospital unions, part of the nursing staff went on strike this Tuesday throughout France.

The ills of the hospitals are numerous, and the staff, angry, deplore a resounding lack of resources. For this reason, four of the five main unions in the hospital sector -CGT, FO, SUD and Unsa- called a strike for this Tuesday. A day of national action followed in multiple establishments, such as the Auxerre hospital, where 11.31% of the agents were on strike at noon, according to L’Yonne republicaine.

The Union OF denounces a “catastrophic situation” for public hospitals, “even more critical than that known in the summer of 2022”. Therefore, it calls for “emergency measures on wages, staffing, working conditions.” The CGT calls for “a massive recruitment and training plan” to make up for the lack of personnel.

insufficient revaluation

The measures announced on June 12 by the government, to raise wages, struggle to convince unions and caregivers. In a context of inflation, the value of the public service point, which serves as the basis for calculating the salary of hospital staff, must increase by 1.5% on July 1. To this are added several measures, including a bonus of 300 to 800 euros for all agents who earn less than 3,250 euros.

“There are quite a few bonuses that divide the agents between different categories of personnel, which are never revalued, which do not count for retirement,” responds the CGT.

Hospital doctors on strike on July 4

Beyond remuneration, the grievances of the hospital world refer, among other things, to the lack of doctors and nurses, the closure of beds and emergency services, or even the suffering of psychiatric services.

Three unions of hospital doctors (CMH, INPH, Snam-HP) have also called for “a day of strike and action” on July 4. According to them, “the public hospital is collapsing in entire sections.” Resignations are becoming more frequent and young doctors no longer want to dedicate themselves “to a profession that has become so unattractive.”
