Covid-19: new variant, increase in cases… Is the mask back?

Most health specialists do not recommend new obligations at the moment, although some still ask for the return of the mask in sensitive and frequented places.

Some still wear it in certain places, others can’t imagine putting it back on. While the country registers a slight increase in contamination by Covid-19, the Minister of Health does not rule out making the use of a mask mandatory again if necessary, but above all calls for its “trivialization”.

“As soon as we have symptoms or are in contact with fragile people, we resume the reflex to put on the mask,” explains Aurélien Rousseau on BFMTV this Monday.

The mask in sensitive places?

Édouard Obadia, resuscitator at the Claude Gallien hospital in Quincy-sous-Sénart, recommends that it be made mandatory again in the most sensitive places: “in hospitals, on transport when there are a lot of people or in shows with a large number of people”.

For Pierre Tattevin, an infectious disease specialist at Rennes University Hospital, “there is no reason to worry at this time” because the virus circulates little and causes “benign forms most of the time”, adding that we must “remain attentive to the vulnerable people”. .

“Many times we have been surprised by this damn virus so we have to be vigilant,” he adds.

A few months ago the obligation to wear a mask in hospitals was lifted. “It must be recognized that there was no disaster when this obligation was removed,” says Pierre Tattevin.

“Perhaps in certain regions where the virus will circulate more, it will have to be reimposed, but for the moment this is not indicated in most hospitals in France,” adds the infectologist.

A “significant help”

“It will depend a lot on the threshold of the number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants at the beginning of the school year,” which today is around 15 while the alert threshold is set at 50, explains Philippe Amouyel, a doctor and professor of public health at the University Hospital. from Lille. “But wearing a mask, when necessary, is an important help in reducing the epidemic,” he adds, however.

“If we all lived with masks all the time, we would end up increasing the ability to protect ourselves against seasonal infections”, adds Pierre Tattevin.

In addition, a new vaccination campaign is also planned for the fall, aimed at people at higher risk, such as those over 65, the immunocompromised or pregnant women.
